Villiers Coil Contact Pad

When i repaired Lazzarous i thought the coil was duff. But after testing it again i have realized its the Contact pad thats come loose. I have the contact pad, But can it be fitted back on. I would think that soldering it on would be a mission. Any methods that poeple know of :?:

What has happened to your coil is that the upper "plate" has detached from the lower "plate". You can see that on the picture. Just dig a little bit in my coil..!
So you can leave it as is, just open the hole for the HT lead to reach the metal. Too much heat for soldering etc may do more damage.

Thanks for that Stelios. I will go and open it up a bit and fit the HT lead up and see how it is. I will keep you posted.

If the pad has come off, you need to have a small hole in it for the coil wire to go through and then re solder. That is easy.

If the pad came off because the wire broke inside the coil..........................that is a mission and may not be a reliable repare at all.

This is beyond any imagination.. I was digging my coil to help Kean so I took of that thing on the picture. The wire reveled so I though, what do I have to loose, let's measure the resistant between the core and the wire reveled. I get some readings but when the polymeter was set to 20Kohms I get zero. When set to 2000Kohms I was getting 463. I don't know why is that happening or what does it mean. But since I get something why not try to fit the coil again in the ignition. I took a small sheet of copper, made a hole, dig a little bit more the ignition to reveal some more wire. Then pass through the hole some wire and solder it. New point for the HT lead to fit was ready. Fit the coil in the ignition and? It SPARKS!!!!!! Unbelievable?

Now I will try to run the girl. The coil is order, for sure one good coil is always useful!

Still have not got this one going yet. Could you post up a pic of what you have done B4 you fit it.

Bit the bullet and put a drop of solder on the contact pad area after i used a dremel to form a dish. Connected the HT lead up and have got 4.74 OHMs 8) Hope this is going to be reliable and not do anything out on the water if it fails

Don't get too carried away - I've just tried two dead coils. Removed the plate and the flat plate sitting on the mica film - exposed a bare wire - nothing on any ohm setting. I am getting continuity locally on the wire - so am on good contact - but zilch to the end ground pins ?
The worst condition one I really dug into the coil - and could still get no reading anywhere I prodded !

I now have two 'really' dead' coils :)

Ive asked before but does no one know the length and gauge of the wiring in these coils with the view to removing the coil and rewinding completely.

I would not think it nessecary to know the turns on the secondary. The primary is thick stuff easy to count that/fill the coil to the same level with same gauge wire. The stiff in there is cloth covered and pretty stout. Just fill the rest of the coil with your secondary and it should work. Or just strip off the scondary and use the primary to power an external coil. Unless your keen to loose a day on the water in favor of tedium and potential for failure I'd skip playing with that thin wire.

Best bet though is to buy one of those 50 year gaurentee coils pair it with a new condenser and HT lead and have reliable ignition till sometime in 2060.

If you remove the secondary wiring and take it with you to a wire supply firm they can tell you the gauge and them you replace by weight rather than length.
