I am not sure about the selector rod but I suppose that in the end may have threads so you may have to undo it.
I would suggest to leave the gearbox soak in diesel or just close it and fill it with diesel. But don't wait to move the selector rod with bare hands. Torque it applied by the lever to move it. In a similar situation I hit verticaly the rod with a soft hammer and it moved from neutral to a gear. If the problem is corrosion pour some coke in the hole of the rod or soak the gearbox in coke. May sound funny but it works.
Try to free the selector rod instead of dismantling the whole gearbox.

Thanks Stelious-I've dropped the whole thing in a bucket of diesel. The square drive shaft / pinion wheel is also frozen -it might help that also. Thanks again

Welcome!
Since the bevel pinion is frozen leave it in diesel for one day, the mud will get loose. Then heat the pinion if possible to remove petrol and then soak it in coke. That was what I did for a stuck pinion.

Success!-immersion in diesel, liberal use of my LIDL hot air gun ,Large screwdriver and a hammer all came together to settle the problem! Drive shaft turns (loads of heat) and Selectors freed (heat and levering) sudden satisfying CLUNK!
.Thanks Stelious!
