10w 40 gearbox oil

I just visited a web site that recommended using modern 10 w 40 engine oil in a seagull gearbox instead of 140 w oil supposedly due to modern advances in oil technology. This sounds odd considering the difference in the thickness of the oil, has any one tried this or would it be likely to damage the gearbox?

I suspect if you used oil that thin, most of it would end up on the floor. :o
