Yes I have had both done. In both cases the end result is excellent.
Chrome platers don't like single items, so I have to save a few bits up. I also arrange to rechrome components for a local chap who collects (would you believe) classic one-armed-bandits, who coincidentally Charles Large and myself saw outside the pub at lunchtime...
I will be sending a batch off in a few weeks. A drive shaft may cost about £15.00, less if it's good to start with, or more if it's rough. The cost is determined by the amount of polishing work required. Exhausts are usually a little less. The finish is a bright chrome of a bluish rather than a yellowish tinge, but if you put a new old one and a newly plated one together they're both similar.
Postage adds a bit, too.
This is actually reasonably cheap, because I send batches off every now and again.
The finish is like a mirror, but the danger is of course that the rest of the motor looks rubbish! It's a bit like painting one door in your living room...
Exhaust clamps and tank straps can be either chrome or nickel.
The firm that does this for me did British Seagull's plating in the final years of chrome plated bits.
PM me if you'd like me to add you to the next batch.

'PM me if you'd like me to add you to the next batch'
Naturally that should read:
PM me if you'd like me to add your components to the next batch
(They have trouble polishing humans sufficiently well to get a good finish)

Thanks for my drive shaft tube Charles, your right it makes the rest of the motor look really tatty.
Mine was a fairly rusty 102 drive shaft tube which seems to have lost all the blemishes & wasn't polished so much so that it was a slack fit in the waterpump housing.
I think £16.50 was a very good deal, as there is no way you can buy a new one.
