Saving Old Seagulls

Some advice please.

I have a brass tank which appears different in shape to the 40 series ones that I am familiar with. I would like to know what it came off and its date.
Dimensions are:- Fore and aft 4.5". Compared to 5" on others.
Height 3.1" Compared to 3.4"
Length 10.45" compared to 9.8"
End plates corner rad 7/8" Compared to 3/8" or 7/16"
These differences are not huge, but I thought larger than general variation.
The end plates are flat and without the SEAGULL stamping. Is it an early 40 series or is it from a larger Seagull?

It is indeed an early Forty series tank - specifically one of the earlier LS or LM motors. These were the first of the Forties that did away with the curved lugs of the FV/FVP style cylinder head.

Thank you Charles for the info that it came from an LM or LS. I wouldn't mind the rest of the outboard - preferably the LM version - but that is a real long shot. More sensibly it should be reunited with an LM or LS which is tank less. Any takers?
I presume Charles, that your very early SJM hasn't got this tank version?

Oyster, I don't plan to put the decal on, except of course if I had the remainder of the LM......

No Jeremy, I think by the time they had got around to the 'proper' Forties they had moved to the more familiar shape. I have no idea at all why they changed.

Oyster's thread about canted tanks got me thinking. (to nearly quote!).

In actual fact it got me examining my (FV) canted tank. It is the same carcass as my LM/LS tank as identified by Charles. I should have realised that before. Of course all the fittings are in a different position, but dimensionally the carcass is the same.

This I would have thought is no great surprise. The canted tank was in production; along came the LM/LS, and so they used the same shape tank. Have I got the chronological details correct, Charles?
