oil leaking from bottom of muffler/cooling tube

Post by joe »

I am a new Seagull owner. Recently acquired a '75 WSPCL in running condition and am trying to learn what is/is not normal. Starts on first or second pull and has good water flow. Runs smooth with good throtle control. However, after shutdown, heavy, black oil-like liquid drips from bottom of muffler/cooling tube. 10:1 mix. What is source of fluid? What is considered normal?

Thanks.

Thats called sea-gull droppings   . Very Normal for a british sea-gull outboard that runs 10-1 ratio. Thats why i have an ice-cream container underneath evrytime i leave it in the garage, its just unburnt oil.

A '75 engine could be converted to run on a 25:1 fuel mix. Details on the SOS website.
They still tend to drop some black oil but not quite so much. I have converted both of mine ( '73 40+ and '74 Featherweight)

Welcome to the Forum Joe... I'm a relatively new owner too and joined the group last month. Lots of knowledge and experience lurks on this forum
Mine is a 1971 Silver Century in mint condition and I can only run it on the lowest fuel ratio of 10:1, which is fine except for the gastro it leaks within minutes of shutting off and placing on its support.
I don't really mind because I know the high oil content seals my crankcase bushings and lubes the cylinder, piston rings and all moving innards and these engines can run eternally if well maintained.
Nothing compares to the Seagull for the shear love of smell, smoke and sound... it's like a song which haunts you and makes you want to hear and smell again and again.

Remember the Platters song group of the 50's and 60's? Well I'm sure their hit song "Smoke gets in your eyes" was composed because at least one member had a Seagull ! (just joking)

Be sure to check John Williams site and read it through... like me you'll learn lots and he's the contact for all the parts and tips.

Cheers!

Thanks for the info. I plan to convert to 25:1. That change, a few minor parts and some TLC should make her the envy of the lake resting on the stern of my '79 Siren 17.
