Went down to visit Tinker on saturday and he kindly gave me some assistance to putting together my 102 race engine . I have two sliver centuries and two 102's . the idea is to leap frog test them against each other to some degree . The question is ..... do I run grease in the gear case or a heavy oil and change each day .this is a clutched model Your thoughts gentlemen .

You Kiwis will get little help from me now your combining knowlege, I use dry ceramic tile grout in my gearbox, when you get a little water past the prop shaft bush it turns into a very smooth paste, cement powder works good to!

I don't want you lot getting too fast as you won't be able to give me a tow when you catch me up, next time I brave the Waikato!

Seagulls were designed to run with a mix of oil and water . Changing every day would defeat that. Grease is a definite no no.
I have no reason to think a race engine would need anything different except being more important to run as designed for.

With my Range Rover (1981 2xdoor) It is recomended to use a 50-50 mix of gear oil and grease for the front swival hubs, Its because oil on its own weaps out threw the seals. Could this method be used on a seagull gear case.

I would stick to 140 grade oil if I were you, or perhaps a slightly lighter grade if you intend to change it every day. Grease is useless as it does not emulsify with water that gets into the gearbox. Once you have stripped a gearbox somebody has put grease in you will never consider it again!

As for putting grout into the gearbox, why? It will just act as an abrasive. I will now start using 140 grade oil when tiling

Why?

There is less friction if the bits that used to rub against each other no longer touch!

Oh & less competition for the lone Pom, if he makes it.

tile grout was not something I considered ! But since YOU suggested Charles it will go to the top of my list ! (as viewed from your hemisphere ) .
I already removed all the grease from the case and some of it looked like grout any ways . Remember guys this model was fitted WITH a grease nipple .

Actually it was fitted with an oil nipple.

Have a look at the FAQ.

Ive been experimenting with one of my 102's and have decided that actually wooden gears is the way forward
then you can do away with the powersaping oil totally!
of course must be made from a hard wood like an OAK tree or similar
unfortunately instead of changing the oil everyday now you must put in new wooden cogs everyday
so get whittling FTW.

Niander must be something in the water where you live, I could imagine a scotty sitting down and carving a few gear sets. Save a few pennies that would.
