Riptide Boatman Single (Side Trip)

Side trip indeed.

As I said, I have the feeling that the O/S piston etc in the Single is going to be useless at the end of the day so, I picked out a locked up twin for donor parts.

Parts are at least one useable piston and the port side block.................I have managed to remove the flywheel (Different from others), loosen other side head and all fasteners to leave a "Loose" but still locked up heap.

The flywheel came off with gentle words, heat and lubricant.

As I said, this twin was left upside down sometime and got wet in exhaust ports and.....

We can now prove the fact that rust is still magnetic.

The points cam was a little bugger but, off it came.

SO, now the complete lump is going into the same machine shop local that does my aluminium welding for a good soak in their tank over the weekend before they pull the barrels from the pistons much more reliably than I could possibly achieve myself.

I have other good bits but I do not want to waste them as stated in the other post.

Wish me luck Aye?

PS: Thank you Hugo, we all need a Hippy Mate every now and again for layout advice

Thanks for that.

I was taking the above lump into the machine shop and had a flashback to a power head I got off Ebay ages ago......I realised that is why the bottom drawer in my office is heavy. It was complete mechanically sanse rings, I do not know why as it was all tight and together. It has been run at some stage but very little time doing it obviously below.

Anyway, back home and out it came, off came the port barrel with piston and pin. Got one of the spare single heads, cleaned them up and have some good sound bits to use.

That is sorted, I have to find the stud extractor so that new ones will suit the single (Different lengths)and a set of rings which is Monday fun being either off the shelf or maybe a week wait. Does not matter as some direction is clear now.

I cleaned everything up, the "sorted" including putting the barrel into electrolysis while I mowed some clover etc.

Came out well

And did some soda and polish by hand of the selected head

Painted Black Engine Enamel Gloss as that was what they had.................Man was it hard to get off the original?

Air drying before baking in oven.

All good, Monday is the rings sorting hopefully off the shelf.

I have taken some of the green bits off the motor and polished them up to take into my local auto paint store for colour match in spray cans x 3. The Twin can be done at the same time so I have a matched set.

Totally Cool

Last post for Side Trip

Had paint match done for the Green and have piston rings ordered for good bits to finish mech stuff. They are 2" x 5/32 x 0.085

I had two spray cans filled so as to do the twin as well.

Test spray on pulley....................So Cool!

Studs out shortly as it is a twin barrel donor and needs different for the narrow single head etc.

Stay tuned and new completing Riptide single update shortly ("Ripturd" Single now dubbed by one of my dodgy Mates down south on the Coast)

Just a late update here.

"Ripturd" has new rings filed and a pre assembly check of piston/rings/bore feel by hand is all done.

I invested in a new needle file set..........made things easy.

The ring pins are centered and low in the groove so filing for rotation was under and upside down.

New files are a must! Cut so easily.

Cheers
