Saving Old Seagulls

out in the boat yesterday orkney longliner.
engine working tip top esc 181 hh1.
put it in the fresh water bucket to flush it out when i got back to the harbour.
pulled the start rope nothing it just went round like a spinning top. tried it another three times.
it is just like a spinning top.
the fly wheel sits atop three four pillars and i have been adviced not to remove,
it as it is a co ignition .
all help most wellcome.

could the woodruff key or fly wheel key possibley have broken or sheared.

That would be my guess but you are going to have to remove the recoil to get to the flywheel and it may be that the recoil to flywheel is amiss

its a model 75 esc 181 hh1 there is no recoil it is the standard flywheel wrap the rope 3 times and pull.

I would say loose flywheel nut.

If you have a recoil remove the two slotted head screws, and take the recoil off.

You will see the nut on the end of the crank. I guess this is loose, there ia a big ali spacer under the cup, nut and washer.

There is no mechanical link between the rope pull and the flywheel, just friction so nut must be tight.

If the woodruff key is OK the flywheel will not be spinning on the crankshaft.

You can tighten the nut by hitting the ring spanner with a hammer.

P.S. just read it is non recoil, just pop off the plue plastic cap and you will see the nut.

Stuck valve
Head gasket blown and not sealing?
Pull the plug and see if the piston is going up and down.
To lean, holed piston?
Con rod come adrift?

If the nut is tight there should be no problem.

Make sure all the bits are free from oil and grease.
Aluminium grips aluminium quite well http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/frict ... d_778.html, you could add a couple of drops of loctite, but I have never had to do this.
Just tighten it up an give the ring spanner or ratchet a couple of whacks with a hammer.

There is a small hole in the top of the flywheel under the aluminium spacer, this is there so that a small pin can be drilled & loctited into position to stop this slipping, Seagull used a lot of these pinned sleeves on the more powerfull motors that had CDI's & recoils.

I now drill all of my recoil/CDI racing motors & use a 4mm needle roller as the fixing pin, loctite will work in an emergency.

It doesn't slip at the top at first but slips on the top of the flywheel face using crushed paint as a lubricant & when that's gone it's no longer tight.
