Saving Old Seagulls

I have a 102 plus. which seems to be okay on running. when I layed the engine down in the bottom of my boat as it is the backup engine. the gearox oil leaks out from just above the gearbox. is this normal? is there a seal gone? how do I fixit? thanks

welcome to the wonderful world of seagulls, sounds like a normal gearbox, if seagulls aren't leaking somewhere there is something wrong with them

sounds like its from the exhaust anyway thats also normal
but do check your gearbox oil is full

Liam - what grade of oil are you using - 140 weight ? You could always use SAE 250 if you can find it.
But don't even consider EP90 !

EP 90 is ok in the gearbox as long as you change it after using engine, thicker oils are a real pain to drain and tend to gunk up after a period of time.

What colour oil is leaking?
If it is light brown it is gearbox oil, if it is black it is unburnt 2 stroke oil from the exhaust. That runs all over the gearbox too. It is possibly coming from the joint of the silencer tube and the upper gearbox housing.

the seagull is used as a backup outboard and is stored on its side so thats why i wondered. but i feel reassured now thanks to your posts and the welcome to the world of seagulls. the oil leaks out of the exhaust so i will have to top it up when i use it .

Liam,
There is nothing to top up, as I stated this is unburnt two-stroke oil, as long as you use your standard mixture (10:1 or 25:1 depending on model) you will have no problems.
100ml of oil to every litre of petrol is a lot of oil, some burns giving the traditional two-stroke smoke, some is scavenged by the system to lubricate bearings, bore etc, and the rest condenses on the inside of the exhaust tube. When you shut down the motor, this oil cools and runs down the tube and out the slip fit joint at the bottom. This is where your oil comes from.

Hi Liam,
As others already mentioned here, some gear oil seepage in that area is normal. I have a 40+ and there is no seal on the upper bushing in the gearbox. Since new, when my engine is stored horizontal, over time, some oil seeps out in to the driveshaft housing area ... and as soon as I stand the engine up the gear oil begins to trickle out through the drain slits in the housing. If I overfill the gearbox a little too much, amount of seepage is even worse. It is good to keep a close eye on the gear oil to keep it topped off to proper level. For this reason I try to store the engine vertical when possible - causes less mess.
