Had to replace an impellor today after i snapped on of the 4 arms from my old one. On fitting another (second hand from another engine) it is not very tight on the shaft and can be moved up and down with little effort. I did clean the rust from the shaft with a wire brush but dont think i took that much from it. is there anything that can be done to keep it in place?

Maybe.
Have you replaced it with the right one?
What motor is it ?
Did the original have split pin or not?
A little more info or I can get the tarot cards out.

I'd be inclined to put a wee dab of Araldite above and below the impeller when it's in the right position - not too much mind - just enough to hold it in place, so that it could be easily chipped away if you needed to replace the impeller yet again ...

It may slide up or down and rub on the gasket or housing. I had a loose one, and cross drilled and added a cotter pin, stainless. Located it 1/16" (1 1/2mm) above the spacing gasket. Bend ears back to assure clearance. Maybe that was not necessary.... Art
