Propellor Pin Question

I think i read somewhere here about replacing the prop split pin with an R Clip. (See pic attached of mine) for ease of removal when in test tank etc after use.

Is this safe to do when running on a dinghy? Centrifugal force shouldnt spit it out shouldnt it ?

Anyone had problems with this or should i just stick to split pins ?

I would stay with a split pin myself. Vibration of the spring could rotate the clip 90 Degrees?????

How about some endurance testing and let us know how the clip idea pans out.

Works well if you put the clip the right way. The way u have it is correct.

The 'R' Clips are indeed OK to use, as the tail half the clip is the other side of the shaft they stay on!

I have used them but to be honest I prefer the split pin as it just 'looks' more secure!

Also it depends how often you have to replace springs... In the soft mud of the East coast of Essex I still have the same spring on my TSEFPC as it had when new in 1993!

Sadly I know that some of you tend to get through 2 springs an outing in less tolerant conditions! Then it would be worth useing an 'R' clip... Still got a few here £1.10 a time.

I did it like this, small piece of lock wire on the tail of the R clip. One way or another you'll need to have pliers in you boat tools anyway, i haven't broke a prop spring yet but i think this would be easier changed in a hurry.

I wouldn't rewire at sea unless i had time and i carry nippers anyway, and a split pin and washer. Just wasn't sure if the Centrifugal force would spit the pin out at high revs, as most of our fishing is done close'ish to shore the most likely time i'm going to snap a spring off is going to need a quick change. Thought this might have been a little quicker to do than the split pin, maybe not. Anyone done a change time test??

I've used the R-clips extensively. Incl;

* Across lake Wanaka & down the Clutha river. 206Nm. 4x Days running
* The Waikato. 76Nm. 2x Days running

Never experienced an unwanted release. Good for testing different props quickly

I usually take some effort to remove the burrs from the propshaft

Great advice, thanks guys. Its a snug fit and ny gut feeling is that it should be ok. I think ill sea test it with the R Clip.
