Saving Old Seagulls

I want to reassemble the crank housing and need to know what to use as a gasket before I mate the two halves together?

There is no gasket between the crankcase halves.

Most people use a thin smear of silicon RTV.

I find that if you lap the two halves on some 1000 grit wet and dry on a flat surface (granite worktop), this will show up any distortion.

If you use a felt pen on the mating surfaces before lapping, that will also make it easier to see.

Do not remove any material, all you want to do is make sure there are no burrs.

Also it can be quite common to have a little distortion where the tiller stub is, this will show up by the felt pen remaining after a light rub on the wet and dry.

No gasket? , the two halves I take it must be very smooth or flat or how does the crank area build a vaccuum if it leaks? Just curious...........

Some do leak, but they are pretty good, never had a problem with one myself, yet.

If in doubt, a smear of Hylomar on the surfaces will stop any weeping - but the guys are correct: there's no gasket.
