Saving Old Seagulls

Got another powerhead to play with today (thanks Niander).
Looked a bit rusty, was worried that the bore would be rusty.
But it looks ok.

Has a spark, which is always a bonus. Has a broken tiller arm stub, but looks the same casting as a century.

This will be a Osprey Century.
Will it be better than a 170 Century ?

As a general policy it is not possible to change crankcase bottom half's between identical models let alone completely different models.

Manufacturing tolerances normally exclude this unless your really really lucky.

The cheapest repair would be to weld on another tiller arm stub taken from a dead century a £10.00 repair, the next cheapest would be a used crankcase around £25.00 or a new crankcase £100.00

Straightened the crank, was bent about 8 thou.

Found an identical casting with same bearing, good fit will need a light skim on the mill on the cylinder face 15 thou.
Crank spins well, no need for a ream. Must be lucky.

What did you have to do about the crankcase locating dowels, & are you going to put a vacuum feed in the lower half for the fuel pump?

Quote "as a general policy it helps to have a mill" I think "helps" should have read "essential" as there's at least an hours machining time & at a minimum of £35 an hour in the UK, it might be cost effective to buy a used crankcase with good bearings.

Managed to get down the shed today.
Light fiy cut, about 10 thou cleaned it up perfectly.

Now will replace dowels and cut vacuum grove.

Could well be ready for Cholsey.

Making new gasket now, Century Osprey/Kingfisher could well be at Cholsey with the Century 170.
I plan to cut down an SD prop and re-pitch it a little.
Anyone else tempted to come to Cholsey?

New rings, cylinder honed, lower crankcase dowels fitted.

Bit of paint few bolts and then test next weekend.

Have gone for a more modern Mariner type colour.

I don't think that I will have this ready for Cholsey as the paint is taking a long time to dry.

I had better bring my stove to Cholsey so we can toast the launch of Manifolds new boat with a brew.

Manifold do you want me to bring a spare engine, as yours is untested on the river?

This was taken at the Essex do.

Runs well, I am very happy with my Osprey/Kingfisher/century, it has plenty of grunt and pushes my yellow boat at hull speed.

Now I need to try it on on a smaller boat. As it has elements of a century can I use it in the modified century class
