so... not all SJM models were created equal?

I've been accumulating some spare parts for my 40 minus SJM model, and I was (apparently) mistaken that any SJM part would work on mine. In particular, the magneto base plate, though it is stamped with the exact same part number, they are different??? Some have a bib (or shelf or whatever it's called) that only goes 1/2 way around the perimeter, while the one on mine goes ~3/4 of the way around. More importantly, though it is hard to see the difference that makes it so, the flywheels I have all scrape (not enough clearance) on the magneto base plates with the 1/2 way around bibs. Is the difference between early 50 models, and later 60 models of SJM?
Can anyone add to this discussion, or point me to an earlier discussion to help me with this issue? No 1., is there a trick to be able to use the different magneto plates interchangeable? shims, etc. on the tapered shaft to keep the flywheel higher? The Villiers ignition works fine, but you hear a scraping noise as the flywheel rotates. No. 2., is there just the two styles of magneto bases for the SJM? or are there more? ...and why?
Any help is appreciated.
