Saving Old Seagulls

Hello all,
Does anyone know what the diameter of a century piston is. I`ve sucessfully managed to break a ring on the 120 ferrier .
The piston diameter is 5.5cms.
If this is impossible to obtain I wondered would the motor run on one ring ?

Not impossible at all. Just contact John (who hosts this forum via the main SOS web site) and he will happily and promptly supply you with new rings.

Thanks I was a bit hesitant to contact John as I was uncertain as to whether the Ferrier piston was the same diameter as a Seagull one, anyhow I`ve sent an E-mail now so hopefully problem is solved.

The bore on a 102 cc Seagull is 56.871mm, so a Seagull ring will be about 6mm too long.

Have you tried searching the web for cast iron ring manufacturers?

It's unlikely that Ferrier were large enough to commission their own pistons so check out Villiers piston sizes that were made around that time.

Didn`t know that its possible to have one made up so, where there`s a will there`s a ....... piston ring !

From what the American outboard enthusiasts say these are the people to use.

I have not used them myself, but could be worth an email.

As the questioner omitted to put his location it's impossible to know where to send him for the closest supplier, Villiers & Atco both used 55 mm pistons, so the rings should be fairly available here in the uk.

Subject to the questioner know the material, dimensions & pin location/size details.

I believe that the Villiers Mk.12 engines were 55mm bore but I think they were side valve four strokes and may not have had pegged rings which is what I imagine you need.No doubt they could be modified if the rings are the correct thickness.

I have e-mailed coventry metaling and boring . Just to say as way of explanation that I´m in finland and it was minus 23 degrees celsius when I broke the ring. It is the first and hopefully last ring I break but it seemed to break very easily (maybe because of the cold ?)

Anyhow its now a balmy 2 degrees now so I´ll have no excuse next time !.

I have several leads here yet to pursue (or rather get them to reply to my E-mails). Still with winter only just losing its grip I can imagine people are reluctant to go through stuff looking for old rings.

There`s quite an industrial base here still so having one made up must be poss. Anyhow thanks for your help.
