Yamalube SAE90 Outboard Gear Oil
Hi,
More advice please.
I've got a Model 45, Featherweight, EGF441JJ1. Is it Ok to use Yamalube SAE90 Outboard Gear Oil?
If not, what should I use?

Type your engine number in to the Seagull engine number identifer, that's what it should have, Yamahalube will do the job if your bearings are perfect & your prepared to change the oil at very frequent intervals, like every hour or two.
Unsealed featherweigh lower units die more frequently than any other gearbox, due to owner disregard to the gear oil condition.

This site says use SAE or EP 140 but other sites say use SAE 90.
So who's right? Apologies for my ignorance but I'm very new to Seagulls.

Can you give links or the address's of the other sites please.
Seagull gearboxes that don't have oil seals, use SAE 140 or special grease if fitted with grease nipples.

I've just checked my EGF165HH1 which is 1 month older than yours, No seals in my lower unit!
If in doubt, err on the side of caution SAE140.

Re: Yamalube SAE90 Outboard Gear Oil
I'm still confused - this site also says that SAE 90 can be used for my gearbox:
http://www.saving-old-seagulls.co.uk/i_ ... etters.htm
If we assume that my EGF441JJ1 has all its original parts, please could someone take a look at the photos below and tell me the following;
1. Is it a sealed gearbox?
2. Does it use bronze seals?
3. Can I use SAE 90?
4. Can I use SAE 140?
5. Can I use EP 140?
6. The last image is the brown gunk in my oil filler cap - is this healthy?

Re: Yamalube SAE90 Outboard Gear Oil
Need to see a pic of the prop shaft where it enters the gear box, after the props been removed.
That oil needed renewing 2 years ago.

Re: Yamalube SAE90 Outboard Gear Oil
Those pictures only confuse the issue more.
The principle difference between the sealed & non sealed featherweight gear boxes where the prop shafts exits the box is the bronze bush, on a sealed box the flange on the bush is inside the gearbox & on the unsealed it's on the outside.
Your box would appear to have the flange on the inside, therefore sealed but you can see the bush, so it would imply that no seal is fitted & there is no provision for fixing an oil seal.
Seals were fitted on the following featherweights, FS, GFS, EFS, & not EGF, AF & EF.
Your box needs the end cap removed & all that crap flushed out, the gears inspected for corrosion damage, if ok, then new SAE or EP 140, your PM about that cheap oil which looks very cost effective, perhaps you should post the details on this thread.
Perhaps you should ask the other site where they got their information on this subject, it might well be a typo, I've noticed one or two others on there.
Mind you we make mistakes, & are very greatfull for people bringing them to our attention.

OK looks like I have a bit of work to do. Thanks for all the help, Charles.
For anyone who is interested in the cheap EP 140, I reckon that most of you will probably know about it - but here's the link on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Smith-Allan-EP-14 ... 2182wt_906
Note: The picture is showing a 5 litre container but the sale is for 1 litre for £2.11 which includes p&p.
