Saving Old Seagulls

i recently removed the two cylinder base bolts from a 40 block and found that one was shorter than the other. i presume that this is not right so what size should they both be please? never played with a forty before and i dont have another with which to compare it. would appreciate any help

Seagull Part number is 217. It is exactly the same as the 5/16BSF head bolt. Thread length is 1 inch. This a standard bolt used on many BS motors. Details from my bench book.......

Unless they are radically shorter I'd not worry. If they are longer it won't hurt . The extra length will simply protrude into the water jacket. You can always easily cut it down to length to avoid corrosion risks making it more difficult to remove later........

No. Just a plastic bathtub. Quite tippy, slow, heavy and not something that will ever make it to Lerryn even though it is mm under 12 feet long. The manufacturer's plate has been removed so no easy identification however there was a suggestion that they were made in Wales by a company called Ferranti or something similar( though no obvious connection with the great Ferranti electronics dynasty up in Edinburgh ).

thanks peter.....that saves me searching through boxes of bolts to find one the right size! interesting that they are the same as the head bolts though
