Seagull Starting Problem

Post by robotsuk »

Hey,
i have a segull silver century ( i think,)
And i have cleaned it up, cleaned the fuel tank, carb, new oil in gearbox etc etc, so i try and start it up,
It took a whole load of pulls for it to fire, then started 3 or 4 more pulls :), Sometimes it will also cut out aswell, if i give it some throttle sometimes it also dies on me for some reason,

Can someone please help me with this problem?

Thanks

Kris :) x

Oh just to add the post,
Sometimes also smoke come's out of the water outlet on the block, is this normal for bucket starting? but it pumps water fine at high revs :) x

could be a couple of things but make sure that the choke is working and that it is fully shut when you are starting the engne.

give the carb another clean, blow the jets out with a compressor if you have one, also try another plug and check the fuel filters.

I think I'm correct in saying that all centuries have a choke. I wonder if she has the correct carby on her? I have come across a couple with lawnmower carby transplants which basically don't work. Is "Seagul" written on the air filter(?) cowling?

To save us all playing twenty questions ......can I suggest you go back to the start and tell us the model/serial number on the crankcase and then post a picture or two............then use the serial number checker on here yourself to confirm what you have?

Have a pleasurable read of the FAQ and info pages on the main site; I'm pretty sure you will find answers to all the usual issues in bringing a motor back into service. The "smoke" you refer to is most likely steam; Seagulls rarely pump water at tick over speed but they will overheat and seize if left on tick over indefinitely!

I haven't heard anything yet that suggests it is an out of the ordinary problem. All motors need to start is a roughly correct fuel /air mix, some compression and a spark. Check back over those three areas in the FAQ (but do not reach for the electric drill; that fix is not a panacea for all ills and you may well wreck the motor.)
