Newbie wants to restore a forty plus? Several questions!

Hi there,

I have what I think is a 1970 40+ short shaft according to the number checker on this site and some pics I have looked at!

I have a few problems I hope you can help me with! The exhaust tube is missing completely! Are these available new? If not, can anyone tell me the measurements? I am wondering if I could use a bit of stainless steel pipe? I am planning a full nut and bolt rebuild (just fancy the challenge, dont even have a boat at the moment!) so would prefer to stay original if possible! The water in tube is bent like mad but im sure i can get that straight!

The next problem is the reason it was stripped to start with - it lost drive to the prop. The problem is at the bottom of the shaft. THere is a split pin that sits in a groove like the slot of a slat head screw. Half of this has sheered away so there is no drive. Surely this isnt standard? I looks like a botch to me? Anyone know what it is I need to buy? Sorry for the poor quality pics!

I have a small oil leak near the prop ,thats gotta mean there is still oil in the box - can only be a good thing! The chrome is shot, I will price re chroming it but does anyone have any experience of the chrome spray paints?

I cant wait to start stripping it down - any tips gratefuly received! Also, while im hassling you all - can anyone tell me from the pics what carb this is?

I can see me asking many more questions in the future! Am I glad I found this site!

There are some exhaust tubes on ebay so thats that sorted! I am just worried about the drive problem? Surely its not supposed to be driven by a split pin in a screw slot?

Looks like plenty wrong with that one, maybe you should find another 1968-1974 [ie with Villiers rather than Bing carb] and swap bits till you have a good one. Both ends of the driveshaft should be the same and fit over squared pieces [on bottom of crank and top of gearbox pinion shaft]

So is it a gearbox/gearbox pinion shaft you think I need? It had also seized up! Ive got the head off, it and freed it off nicely now. I have sanded and chrome spray painted the rusty shaft in the pic which now looks quite good. The water pipe is straight and its all cleaning up quite nicely!

Soooo, is it a gearbox I need do you think?

Yes, a different gearbox, the part below the pump cover gasket. That is the easiest fix, especially if the motor has ever seen salt water. Basically, the pinion gear, pinion gear shaft and likely bush need replacing. The simplest way is another gearbox.

Are you taking the p*ss? :D :D I got accused of having "Shiny fetish USA" on my other thread.... :lol:

Anyway, in case your not - heres a pic. :D http://www.landyworld.co.uk/outboard001.jpg It needs another coat or two which I will do in the next few days. Im quite pleased for an aerosol tho, it was a fair bit cheaper than getting it rechromed!!!

Thanks for that, I will start hunting for a second hand one! Oh and for the record, your right - I bought black paint for my tank... :lol:

I think you are onto something here. Wonder what it's long term resilience is (aerosol).
