Bit Of Help With A New Motor

Hi just got hold of a Silver Century with an Amal 2 jet carb. The outboard runs brilliant but it seems to only want to "tickover" with the choke on. It will run fine from around half to full throttle but anything under that the choke has to be put on to prevent it from stalling.

are there any adjustment screws or the like on the carb as i cannot see any at first glance?

Thanks

Could the primary jet be blocked?

If so (this carb has two jets inside the body), and I'm sure a dozen more learned bods will correct me, you will need to dismantle the carb to get to it.

It would be easiest if you saw a picture of the exploded carb. I'm sure there is one on the site. Before removing the carb from the cylinder by undoing the single pinch bolt, unscrew the large cap from the carb top where the cable disappears into.
Remove this cap with the cable/ piston assembly. Look into the body and on its floor are the two jets. Before further dismantling just look at the general crud build up and possibility of a blocked jet. The holes are very fine. Do not force a thick wire down them and distort the inside diameter.
You could remove the carb now to the bench or remove the bottom bolt holding the float chamber to the carb body. Warning this bolt and its thread is the reason for many of these carbs being scrapped - corrosion! Be careful and get Redex into the thread if possible.
Now apart from the choke cowl which is easily unscrewed, the carb is ready to remove from the engine if its still there, and then the jets checked. Or removed. However, a special removal socket is preferred to remove these. If you can borrow or steal one of these rare items, removal is easy.
To find one or make a substitute there are threads referring to it and I can't remember the titles. You will have to trawl.
The float chamber will also need dismantling and cleaning. Remove its bottom pipe banjo nut and the top cap.
Come back with a progress report.
