Saving Old Seagulls

Got this today, along with 2 other Evinrudes!

She is a 59-60 SJP 2-3 hp, and didn't have spark when I got her, but I cleaned up the points and now she has great spark!!
I need to go over the fuel system as it smells varnishy, but she should run, and she is a nice clean FRESH WATER motor!!

Now thats a nice looking motor, should clean up really well, even the tank is relatively dent free! good find if she runs as well as she looks.

I like the stand the Seagull is on!! Did that come with it?

Those Evinrudes look like classic engineering!

Were the 102 alloy caps used for Seagull export oval tanks?

The stand didn't come with it, it is my 1950's Evinrude factory showroom stand.

they were on all classics i think(centuries at least) prior to 1967. my LLS (1961) has one which is original but i have a couple of 1969 W's with plastic caps.
all three were probably sold here in australia originally of course!

I got her running today after work, by cleaning the carb and flushing out the tank, and it started on the 1st pull!! She pumps water like a fire engine and runs like a champ!! I also did a compression test, and she has 130 psi, the same as my 1968 FP and my 1969 F. I'll post more pics of it after I cleaned it up and I also made a video of it, which I'll post tomorrow after I get home from work.

Looks in a lot beter condition than my SJP, may be the weather over there is more favorable tothe chrome work. Still keep up the polishing, seagulls do look better with a regular wash and brush up.

Your 'squeaking" noise during shut-down sounds a lot like metal-on-metal. Perhaps the magneto coil lanimates are making brief contact with the inside of the flywheel.

Nice test-tank as well with the "transom" bolted through the way it is. And the splash-guard barrel lid!

Regarding the pics - What's with the cylinder head "bolts" - screws, that is. Not only are they straight-slotted screws, it also looks as if they were ground down on the top. Or that could just be an illusion caused by a camera flash.

Yea, verily. Nothing like getting into a variety of stuff. Most importantly, fooling with twin-cylinder Evinrudes and reed valves, multi-jetted carbs and adjustable ignition timing just helps one to wonder, "why'd they take a perfectly sound idea such as used by a Seagull, and F_# it all up with this other trash?"

No, really - S.G.USA appears to be on the right track and most of my 'training' was on 3 hp Evinrudes. Show me another engine that'll idle smoothly at 6 - 8 rpm. Another simplistic, reliable beast considering the modern marvels of today.

6 to 8 rpm? fantastic! That means it'll fire, well, once in a while...
