A nice little forty plus, number FP461 R3 joined the flock today. At a guess this is a mark 2, factory reconditioned in 1973. Could someone confirm this please ?

Hi Steve,
not too sure about the reconditioned bit, as these motors, the FP's were 1969 to 1979, so would have had a letter code to suit. This did not include the letter 'R'.
The 'R' and number was given only to pre 1963 motors that did not have the later date codes. After 1963 I have not seen the 'R' code on any motors, so guess they stopped marking them...
So what have you got? Is the 'R' actually a badly stamped 'B' or similar? Could be...
Maybe someone replaced the case and bodged the number, who knows... Seagull numbering is filled with similar anomolies.
It should have a Wipac Mk II ignition and might have left the factory on 10:1 mix. however it could have been converted to 25:1 so you will have to check, see the FAQ page.
enjoy your Seagull,
Regards,
John

Thanks John,
it does have Wipac mark 11 and the later plastic bowled Villiers carb. The ID letter is clearly an R so I'll treat it as another Seagull anomaly!
