Saving Old Seagulls

Hi Guys, I've looked the forum and can't see anything relating to the question I'm about to ask. I've just got myself a FPC, don't know if it needs any work done or what but my main how does it work, i.e. do I have to keep it on low revs to engage it in gear or what? My hope is to run it on an inflatable but I don't fancy going for a swim whenever I put it in gear, so any advice would be great. I'm assuming this engine hasn't been run for a while so should I be checking any gear seals or whatever. I read that these engines do have oil seals. It's a 1978 model.

On my 102 and silver century clutch models I keep the revs down and just knock it in.
you don't do it gently either, the clutch ones are easier to start and being at low revs it will take off slowly, remember if you are starting it in neutral be ready to throttle back quickly as it will really rev.
