Saving Old Seagulls

Hi guys my name is jaco im from south africa i bought a 102 yesterday from a guy for R1000.He says that the prop is the wrong size is there any way u can help me to find out if this is so.thanks in advance

To start to answer your question quickly we need to know the model number and letters stamped on your motor's crankcase just above the top of the driveshaft casing tube plus a picture or at least an accurate description and some measurements of your prop. (Diameter & number of blades etc) You could also have a look at the main site descriptions and pictures of all the models to compare what you have on your motor.

Thanks peter model number WC1763F0 the prop has three blades will take a picture and ad it.As far as measuring the prop i will need some info on how to measure it as i dont know how.This is my first boat so im still rather new to all the terms and things concerning outboards.

This is a clutched WC 102 model from 1970, the same year as yours. The first measurement to make is the overall diameter of the circle passing through the tips of the blades.

Hi Jaco - was the previous owner sure the prop is wrong for the motor? Several shapes were used on 102's over the years, ranging from one which looks like one that would be correct for a 40 Plus (4 bladed), one referred to as a 'bow-tie' prop as it resembles a bow tie surprisingly enough (two bladed), and a three blade semi weedless type.
Some or most props have the motor they were intended for cast on the hub of the propellor - eg Forty Plus, Century, 102 etc. are there any clues like this on your prop?
Most folk wouldn't get too precious about prop diameters - just locate a prop 'suitable for a 102', and then with any preference you might have for two, three or four blades. Either way, you wouldn't be making and sweeping changes as far as perceivable performance goes. (I've now opened the floodgates of opinions as to why certain shapes are far superior to others!!) Hello again Jaco - since my last post, I have waved a school ruler at the three 102 props I have - they are all about 9" (230mm) diameter regardless of type if this helps you make a quick assessment. Rick.
