Whining Noise for EFPC

Hi All,
my project this for year breathign life into a unloved '79 EFPC has proved worthwhile. Lots of trips out over the past few months going further and further afield. (Eatbourne to Hastigs and back last w/e with four up. Left the cat at home...)
I have noticed a small concern which I am hoping someone can advise on?
After being used fairly hard for a few hours I can hear a whine type noise. I first I thought it was a mechanical vibration of something else on boat/transom etc but I think not. It wines for a few seconds, fades away for 30 and then wines again. The motor still runs well, cooling looks fine and everything (bar the exhaust) is cool to touch.
The only other thing i have noticed that after a long trip at sea you get a lot of salt crytallising on the exhaust tube and this sometimes blocks up the top two breather holes.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Chris
