HELP!

I have a mongrel CPCL crank case with block on which there is an Amal card. It ran beautifully last night and this morning. Took it to local river and NOTHING! Checked for spark, plug a bit dirty, cleaned it, now have spark. Checked compression, ok, Removed carb, cleaned it. Getting fuel into float bowl. Still refuses to start.
Thot if I have spark and fuel it should be ok.

Sounds like a carby problem. Plug probably the first time and then cleaning carby the second time, also check your fuel. Disconnect the fuel line from carby and let flow into glass jar. If water is in there it will be seen at the bottom. The timing should be ok if you haven't touched it. Juicy spark? I'll be wacking a bit of go-juice into the carby mouth and if you get some sort of firing then you know the spark is working under compression. Also pull plug out and see if you can smell fuel in the chamber when turning over.

After cleaning a carb/fuel system, unless everything is spotless it is easy to get some disturbed muck into the jets, which are less forgiving on an Amal compared to a Villiers carb. One quick check I do is to leave the carb on the engine, but take off the float bowl and the top slide assembly and shine a torch (flashlight) from the underside of the carb hoping to see two clear pinpricks of light through the jet 'oles - or not!
You need to see clear holes rather than fuzzy or obviously blocked ones.

FILTH AND CORRUPTION!!!!!!
Well, not really that bad. But there were some flakes of something or other floating in petrol tank and some submerged stuff perilously close to fuel tap. Am cleaning the tank. Any suggestions and tips for doing a good job?
Am also going to re-clean the carb; put in transparent fuel line to allow monitoring of cleanliness; install an inline fuel filter; replace spark plug; fill tank with new fuel mix; then start yanking. The motor.
BTW, and great ideas for refilling tank while underway?

AGAIN:
Local auto parts store tells me that all new spark plugs come through as resistor plugs. BUT they were able to find a Champion D-16J for 2 cycle motors which they assured me would work.
What do you think?
