Strange engine number

Post by zen »

John suggested I post this as he is as puzzled as myself over following. I have recently acquired a Century (Plus?) long shaft, direct drive with Villiers carb and long range steel tank, gold coloured flywheel, 4 bladed prop.

Had been disused for ages but after cleaning up fuel system and resetting throttle slide screw to flush position it now starts and runs beautifully. The mystery is the engine number the letter combination of which seems to bear little or no relationship to those listed. This is GWL 178 R6. Seems to denote a '78 build and a later factory recon. The number is on the original cast surface i.e. no grinding off and re-numbering. Any thoughts? Regards-Dick Batley
