No spark

Post by EAF1 »

Got a 40 Flyweight (F1098 CCS stamped on engine) which hasn't been started for a few years. We have no spark, and are unsure as to how to adjust the points.

There is no "brass box" under the flywheel - there is a plastic box, with a red wire emerging. This wire is attached to a clip/spring - but there is no obvious gap anywhere.

What am I missing? Thanks for any help anybody can provide!

Oh - further to this. When measured with a multimeter, there is no connection (infinate resistance) between the spark plug lead and the cylinder head.

Do you need to play with the position of the cylinder when trying this test?

Maybe you should acquire the workshop manual for your motor. If not running for a while it may need ongoing repairs and adjustments of MANY kinds and all the details and pictures will prove invaluable, although some dormant motors reputedly run with just fresh fuel and few pulls! John (the proprietor of S.O.S) can get you one.

I am not familiar with your motor as many others her are but the general principles of electrical diagnosis applies to all -

Clean and adjust points. They will be in a box under the flywheel cover plate. 20 thou I believe is their best setting.
Clean and set spark plug to 20 thou.
Test spark by spinning motor with plug out but thread well grounded to head.

If no spark, track back through the system, testing and or replacing eahc component: > plug > HT lead > contact with coil HT output (the removable lug at coil end of HT lead) > the switching at the coil input (the coil end of your red wire should go ground-open-ground-open when motor is spun > your red points to coil wire might be grounding or open circuit due to corrosion or broken insulation > or the coil may need a "spin". See the FAQ pages for more details on this and many other areas.

Good luck!

All now sorted - set points, cleaned plug and started second pull. Manual would be helpful, though!
