Thanks HA my thoughts were that it may have been an extended elbow? In a vain sort of storm guard.

The thread on John's brass tube looks wrong -- but fits perfectly. No looking for a plastic cap to fit over the bell end to act as a choke -- with a small hole drilled in it.

It might look wrong Terry but I can assure you it's right, they will fit on the carbs fitted to the first OA to the last SD.
The early Marston trumpet had a narrowing after the thread up to the start of the trumpet bell & was crome plated but there seem to be very few of these in existence 80% of the rest of the registered Marstons are fitted with chromed "Pepper pot" intakes, the rest have nothing.
I'm not even sure that the Marstons were ever fitted with a trumpet, these might have been taken from a lawnmower fitted with a similar carb as the pepper pot cost 7/6, over a third of a weeks national average wage in 1934, not a cheap device.
SDs seem from what few pictures we've found to have been fitted with trumpets as standard, some chromed, some brass, none were waisted.
Because SDs tended to be owned by a very different type of owner to the per war seagulls, they lead a much harder life, as they were working motors, rather than a petrol paddle for a professional gentleman, as a result of which less than 15% seem to survive with any form of intake.
Don't worry about the lack of choking provision, half a pull with your hand over the trumpet after a good tickle, then a good pull, will convince you.

It is very obvious, STM, that you are having a great time.
Also, you know patience and have a subtle hand with Old engines.
Congratulations and thank you for the blow by blow progress of your project.
You have actually got me into my SD again and , yes, rubbing down the SD tanks is............................
Your running vid is great!.................Mind of its own, well, old enough to do that, Aye.

Charles I have a Marston advert showing an OA with a trumpet, offering the pepper pot as an upgrade..

Sadly I was a design draughtsman but not that good of an engineer . It is mainly down to SOS forum members that got the engine rebuilt.
Brass pipe fits perfectly
video of outboard running but still have to sort out leaking carb.

The best bit is when you leave it running to attend to your mooring lines, and the the old lady jumps into gear
You can move the exhaust clamp round so the clutch lever/rod end sit on top of the clamp. Excellent fun

Found the problem with fuel leak . Almost no thread in carb chamber. Is there any fix. ie ptfe tape or is a replacement the only answer.
Found this on fleabay

I think you better talk to John before you spend a fortune

Re: sd 102 restoration. where do I start ?
I would fit a helicoil. I have been collecting a few duff carb bodies, and I'm going to buy the tooling to start helicoiling these as a future project.
STM I think I might have a carb body with good threads, if so do you want to swap? Drop me a PM.
Trouble with a second hand carb of ebay, you could just be buying another with poor threads. Thats how my collection of unserviceable bodies came to be

Great idea Oyster, the Kiwis put a brass sleeve in them & that works perfectly, did you find out what the thread is?

Hello Charles, I've just measured a banjo bolt, at about 0.620". This leads me to suspect the size is 5/8ths BSFx 14. However I can't find my pitch gauges to check this out. Definately enough material for a helicoil though.
Can anybody confirm this thread size? Where did I put those pitch gauges?

I can't find my gauges but on a rough measure I count circa 26ish.
That would make it 5/8" brass.

I machined mine out and fitted a ally insert with a 13mm thread. Re cut the tread on the banjo bolt, epoxy the insert in and Bingo sorted.
A lot cheeper fix than £40+ replacement
