Saving Old Seagulls

22 November 1003 hrs.
Chip eater heading down river with Gertrude pushing. The side curtains are down because it was raining this morning. What you can't see in the picture is the steady plume of smoke exiting the rear of the boat over the hatch it looks like they are smoking large cigars in the boat. We just passed the 146 klm mark.

22November 2023 hrs

Arrived at wellington. We have now found a use for our flooded compartment.

23 November 0639 hrs.

We have left Wellington heading for the lake.
From the Murray River Pilot....
"protect me, my lord,my boat is so small, your sea is so large "
....seems appropriate.

23 November 1528 hrs

Just arrived Clayton bay after a very rough 8 hr ride across the lake

At Clayton Bay, a run we will never forget and are not wishing to do again soon.
The Seagulls only stopped when we tried water injection (6 times).
Tomorrow we will reach the mouth of the Murray 30 days after we started at Yarrawonga.

23 November 1255 hrs

We have reached the barrage at Goolwa and hence the end of our trip. 1987 klms and 31 days on the river. We are now returning to Goolwa for lunch.

my boat chip eater was about 5Kt johns about 0.2Kt slower at the end.this was the average speed of up stream and down at a little over half throttle.

well done a great adventure to watch,
the wife and me have read every post and waited for the next one
this will probably be the the longest powered by seagulls run now.
we hope to do the Thames from start to Teddington one year
but it will be nothing compared to the Murry run.

This photo shows the damage to the boat which was only visible when we recovered the boat at Goolwa. If I knew the full extent of the damage before we crossed the lake we would not have crossed the lake. Ignorance is bliss. There was also some damage to the transom and gouges on the bottom.
We believe that John and myself have set a record for the longest distance a seagull propelled vessel has travelled in the modern era, 1987 klms in 31 days.

The challenge to better this record is out there.

Well done guys, our thought were on you all the way! Now you have a big story to tell to your grandchildren!
