Re: instructions or Amal Carb
Have you got the chrome fuel tap with the crimped on fuel hose.
These are a bit restricted, with only a small hole through them.
undo the grey plastic banjo, turn on the fuel tap and see how much fuel is being delivered to the carb.
Then reconnect the banjo, and unscrew the black float bowl. There should be a steady trickle of fuel.
Process of elimination, Is the fuel tank full?
Also I would not worry about plug colour, untill you have had it on the boat.

Yes H-A, the chrome fuel tap, I checked both the Banjo and bowl and I do have a decent flow, I do have a brass fuel tap that I can try,
now as for how much fuel actually very little, I mixed up 400 ml fuel with 16ml oil, second try I added another 200 ml plus oil'
I checked inside the tank and still have enough in the tank but tomorrow I will try with 1ltr fuel

Worse case, I buy another Carb, I can't see any 416s online and no idea how much a working one will cost
Villers carbs are about, I actually have one on my 40-, can I use that? I know this 55 has a cowling that draws its air for the Carb from inside the flywheel cover
would it make any difference fitting a Villers?
or will I go to the devil

Re: instructions or Amal Carb
This is the place for help
I forgot about old fuel, the unleaded I was using was 8 or 9 weeks in the can, not mixed with oil
I bought new petrol this morning
I would never have fixed this without the info from Charles or the Magic Wand from H-A
and it is a magic wand, turned so it couldn't be put in the wrong end and a perfect fit
I hadn't thought about low amount of fuel in the tank until H-A mentioned it,
anyway I mixed up a ltr and put it in, the second pull my 55 started and I ran it for 30 minutes
I have a video of the last 10 I will post it here later, if you listen it's not as sweet as I think it could be, maybe someone here can point me in that direction
Can I say a great big Thank you for all your wonderful help, it now looks like my mate can pack in the Gym and look forward to motoring up the loch facing the direction of travel I am off to book up some boats for June

Move the needle in the throttle slide back into the position it was, when you found it.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Re: instructions or Amal Carb
Needle back in the centre and it runs much better, thank you Charles
the other thing I see is that it does take a good few pulls before it starts
once its running it keeps going just perfect,
So thinking about it I have came up with these as maybe why.
1/ I have the mix wrong, (double checked 1 ltr fuel to 40 ml oil)
2/ Then because I emptied the tank after last week could it just be an airlock?
3/ I also notice with the fuel tap open, fuel drips out of the carb, I had thought that could be the split pin that was holding the float in place so I changed that to a proper pin, still getting dripping fuel when the engine is not running, it stops when the engine is running, maybe that is normal? I don't know.
4/ The spark plug has the wrong gap I checked and it is 35 thou.
None of these will stop me from using it but I would prefer it to work as it should so all advice greatly received

Re: instructions or Amal Carb
Sounds like the float valve is "letting by" ( when the bowl is full, fuel still gets past the fuel needle valve) or float height needs adjusting.flyguy wrote: 3/ I also notice with the fuel tap open, fuel drips out of the carb, I had thought that could be the split pin that was holding the float in place so I changed that to a proper pin, still getting dripping fuel when the engine is not running, it stops when the engine is running, maybe that is normal? As there was corrosion in the fuel bowl part of the carb, and the pin had been changed, someone may have been in there before.
Have a close look at the needle seat, I suspect that it may well be corroded, and not giving a good seal to the pin.
There are two choices, clean up the needle seat, or new carb body.
I personally would keep an eye out for a new carb.
There are loads about.

Re: instructions or Amal Carb
H-A is right, it is worth stocking up on a few spares, particularly as this one is a "User" and you are thing it away from base.
Re: instructions or Amal Carb
Thanks I will keep an eye out for another, I can see plenty Villiers carbs around but I can't see any Amal 416 right now, except for an exchange costing near £50 and then I think mine may not be in a good enough condition to swap

Re: instructions or Amal Carb
I've had it apart again looking to see if I can spot what is wrong
I wonder if the needle should clip into the float (marked with an arrow)

or if it just slips in the slot, mine slips in and doesn't clip if that makes sense
I am on the lookout for a new Carb, I have a throttle cable, spare prop springs, replacement Banjo and a able rower
PS. What looks like staining on the carb is just a reflection from my desk
