Hello Community,
this is Dad, the father of mak, to finalize the story of ressurection of a Seagull 102, S/N AD 15225. Upon tank inspection I found a lot of harsh deposits inside difficult to remove the conventional way. So I decided to cut the tank in half also to improve the access to the abundant number of dents. The rest was pure plumbing trade. More headaches caused me the 2- jet AMAL. To restore the functioning I honed the mixing chamber and fitted a fairly decent throttle valve piston. The float chamber needle was reground to ensure proper closing. After assembling and adjusting the engine was running again (pls. refer to you.tube obove). Next I bought an aluminum bracket with tilting facilities off a Silver Century and installed it on my motor. A positive and a negative surprise was the dismanteling of the gear box (fixed gear). It was grease- filled! After picture- consultation with John I was told that the prop shaft and the gears were A- ok and the proper mix in my gear box should be -- runny grease because of the wider tolerances shaft/ bushings in the early days! So I put my gear box together again, adjusted the mesh of pinion and crown wheel with proper thrust washer and shims and filled it with semi fluid grease (German brand: ADDINOL Fliessfett SGA 600). See how it works. Whet testing to follow on a dinghi when it is getting warmer outside. I am already a grandfather.

Thank you Oyster49. The Seagull should not become a showpiece after restoration. Furthermore it was my goal to make the engine re- usable in every respect. No overkill. I enclose some pictures to show the result.

A really nice practical restoration, not 100% to original, but I bet Dieter has a few hours of fun with this during the summer. Pleased he replaced the bracket though! The tank looks very good now too!

Been great to chat with him!

The thread has turned up a few good snippets of info re the oiling nipples and the types of bracket used. Complicated isn't it! It is rare these days to find a Seagull that has not been altered over the years, and even if you do find a seemingly unaltered Seagull, there was no telling if Seagull themselves had any form of firm control over which part was specially fitted to any model, so we can be forgiven if motors look slighty different sometimes! Nice thing is they survive and give people like Dieter loads of fun!

A very nice job indeed!

Congratulations with the Old Dear, see what some time and effort does?

I hope it is used and some feedback, maybe another vid on a transom when you can.

Runny grease as you have, "ADDINOL Fliessfett SGA 600" is noted.

Does it poor and look like what I can get in Australia?

Hi Bruce,
Fliessfett (free- flowing grease) looks and behaves like honey. In Germany there are several companies producing this kind of grease. Here some links: http://www.ravenol.de ; http://www.fuchs-lubritec.com ; http://www.liqui-moly.de . Most offer an English print view. Sorry, I do not know anything about your Australian product. By the way: Ordinary bicycle/ motorbike chain- lubricant is also some sort of "Fliessfett". Please check with your local bike shop. May be it works also in Seagulls gear box.
Best regards,

Dieter

Thanks Niander 101, I got one but I prefer the air intake with choke shutter. Next test will be with a DellOrto carb which I found on a Spanish Seagull Replica from MONTESA, just for the kiks...

Have i missed something but in Macs pictures there’s a shot of the bottom half of the tiller arm. It appears to have a natty little throttle cable ring where the rivet that holds the tube in. Is this a split pin replacement or was this an original feature that is missing off mine?

I have exactly the same AD series motor, c1950-51, so I have been reading this thread with great interest. It belonged to my grandfather who bought it in 1953. It's exhaust note is the soundtrack of my childhood as my father "inherited" it in the mid-60s. My father was and is a keen trout fisher.
I'm getting it going again for next years Waikato River race. I'm looking at getting another one for spare parts/spare engine for the race. What models have the best parts compatibility with an AD? I'm unlikely to find another one. Also my daughter wants to run a boat in the race. We are looking for another motor. If there any models more suitable by way of reliability and/or parts availability? We won't be serious speed contenders, just want to be finishers.

Cheers all,

It's probably best for you considering your location, if you have a look on Rex's regatta events web site, that will give you Graham Keegan's Simply Seagulls contact details, Graham/Jan are the people to talk to regarding the availability of parts, motors & tuning tips in your corner of the World.
If your anywhere near Taranaki it might well be worth jumping in your car & taking your motor to see them, a very nice friendly couple, who are very supportive of the Seagull racing community & who hold a large quantity of Seagull spares & second hand motors some of which he's built for racing.

If you let me know where you live, I might know someone close to you who will talk you through the details of the whole adventure.
Make it idiot proof and someone will make a better idiot.

Thanks for your help Charles. I have been mooching about on the regatta website, and pleased I did, but there is nothing like an active forum like this one for helping a novice seagull spanner man. I know, because I run a website and forum using exactly the same software suzukits.com for people interested in old two-smoke Suzuki trailbikes, as well as helping out on a couple of other websites.
I live in Amberley, Nth Canterbury, not far from Christchurch (used to be in Chch but our house came down in the earthquake), so a long way from Taranaki, unfortunately.

Anyhooo, thanks again.

Cheers bloke
