Phil are you saying that the motor that only runs at tickover has a CDI?
If the answer is yes, why didn't you tell us at the start of all this?

CDIs tend to be more problematical than the Villiers & Wipac magnetos. There should be no problem putting one onto your 40 motor just make sure the key goes in the right slot on the flywheel & that you have the correct baseplate fixing kit. as there is no retaining screw in the baseplate to fix the timing.
Flywheel & base plate must be changed together.

Today I rebuilt the original motor, including the carb and all.
Attempted to fit the recoil start. Unable to fit, the flywheel fouls the casing? This is the new fangled enclosed type, not the cage/frame one. Anyone know about a shim kit for this recoil? The flywheel sits too proud and fouls the inside top of the caseing?
Refitted the wind up string, starts every time but dies. Always fires but won't run. My dad came over and told me I was starting it wrong.
"Full throttle, full choke" he said. Oh, no better.
So to recap
since freeing off seized piston, fitting new rings, 2Xcarbs, 3X not new spark plugs, 1Xbay job, recoil start that don't fit, 3 gallons of petrol, everything works on my best century, one good run, 15 bottles of red wine, 3 hour drive to Plymouth,.
I now have one non running 40+, with recoil that don't fit
one 40+ for spares, from the bay.
one century, welded up cylinder, bolted on side plate, big crack, blue tank, leaks like a bank account, no fuel line.
one perfect century ( apart from that dent in the end of the tank!)
On the bright side I have lost my job, the wife hates me, bad back but lots of time to play with motors!

Avoid me on the bay 'cos I wont be honest!

Finally fixed,
Put my seagull brain back in,
New fuel and oil, check plug and points, wound the needle down until it would not start at all, then up 1/4 turn until it ran. Needle now set 2 1/2 turns up?
Ran in tank for 20 mins, off 10 mins, run for 20 mins, off 1 hour, run 20 mins off 2 hours, run 5 mins. Off and in back of car. On water this weekend!!!!!!!!
Any one ever had to run with a needle this high?
Actually don't reply, it runs like it is and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Thanks for your replies to all of my rantings.
