I understand the archive has grown massively in the last few years though. There was a project a few years back to capture veterans memories on audio/paper and this resulted in a huge amount of old photos being donated.

Where did veterans get photos from? no phone cameras then, about the only people who could get film, was the press & military camera men.
Very few wedding pics then.

That one is a cracker. I think its's highly unlikely that a better representative SD exists anywhere, and I'm not convinced there are many complete brackets left.

There's only one proviso - that a motor that has spent 20ish years in British Military ownership probably hasn't been constantly associated with that box and that bracket since new.

There's one question, too. What are those shear pins for?

I was thinking of bidding until I saw it at over £400 with a good few days to go.

Looking closer, I'm wondering would an army stores make up an individual stencil with the engines unique serial number? Also the paint on the bracket looks a little fresh to me. Why is the bracket painted green, but not the rest of the engine?

I'm starting to smell a small rodent...I don't think the box is original, I suspect it has been made later to match the engine. A British army stores would not use the word gasoline either.

That makes this engine a good quality original, but the box is doubtful..

It's got silly now. The high bidders are bidding on a £150-200 engine, with a rare bracket worth perhaps £70-80 and a box of dubious origin. Get a grip!

Looks all good to me, have bought ex army landrover spares circa 1950, same sort of tropical wrapping used . Waxed cotten and grease with stiff gaffa type tape.

Bracket is a bit bright, but was probably wrapped.

Gasoline to me is not an issue as British Army was involved in multi national conflicts by 1966.

Would expect a good price for this, where would you find another?

My guess is £1000 or possibly more if 2 people want it.

I was tempted but have a couple of SDs that I never use  .

Correct me if I'm wrong.

The bidders are bidding on an apparently unused SD still in it's military packing grease, with all the tools & spares/consumables that come in the box, even the oil gun, a well painted "unmessed with" transom bracket, (mild steel has to be painted or it goes rusty, & green was the quartermaster's favourite colour).
The box looks good to me, but I've only surveyed 2, they both had serial numbers on them & were almost identical to this one internally & externally all 3 seem to have different font sized stencils.

The word gasoline is interesting if you were going to clone a box, you'd make the stencil identical to the one your cloning, were any of the wartime bomber bases in the fens shared by the RAF & the USAF a lot of water around them, it might have been liberated from the RAF quartermaster who provided water transport for the USAF.

I didn't think it would last long, before it disappeared.

I've heard from the seller. Will be relisted. He thought it a '60's motor.

One thing this engine does is give us a clear view re tank decals on SD engines. So some very useful information. Shame we did not see it finish. Wonder who was bidding? Come on own up..
