thankfully, things aren't that bad yet. we still have a lot of lakes/rivers where 2 strokes are allowed.
it seems that as the years go by, the use of 2 strokes is getting more of a disgusted look.
i'm fine where i use my boat, anything goes as long as its not over 6mph! (funny because there is a water ski club on the same water, 6mph with water ski's wont work)
one rule for one, another for everybody else.
i dont bother them and they dont bother me, works just great for me!
i dont think we have too much to worry about at the moment, but anything can change.

Certainly not in Australia where premix 2strokes are still sold. Most manufactured in China or South Korea. I suspect that until legislation they will continue to be available due to their cheapness and ease of construction

In the US the exaggeration kept being used that 2 strokes emitted up to 30% of their fuel unburned through the exhaust in the justification for banning them. When that sort of information is going round from a supposed reliable source then you can expect some dirty looks from some on boat ramps in certain areas of the country.
I don't personally think the move to 4 strokes is a bad idea or agree with putting oil in the water when we don't have to, but I do object to the constant lies and misinformation that is spread when these debates occur. For the amount of action any of my 2 stokes see currently I can live with my guilt

There is still a problem with small 4 strokes which has yet to be addressed by improved technology, if you want a 15 horse for your inflatable then there is still nothing in a 4 stroke that is something you want to lift from your truck and put on your boat. Also I'm not sure you can lie 4 strokes down in you vehicle either because of the oil in the engine?

I am actively following this topic but I tend not to make any comments as Things tend to get out of hand.
All done before over the years.
Two strokes are a problem but not a problem. Depends on viewpoint of which there are many.
4 stroke outboards. How many have a CAT? Think about that. (Just stuffed up the previous statement aye)
Keep talking please.
I hope that you lot understand and
Cheers

Whilst cruising `Youtube` I came across a very large ship engine that had the exhaust port at the bottom of the cylinder like a two stroke and a single inlet valve in the cylinder head next to a diesel injector like a four stroke.. It will give them in Brussels something to talk about.

A lot of those big boat engines are diesel injected 2-strokes with a exhaust scavenge system, so can be economical to run.

you're a car guy are'nt you?
i know exactly what your saying about catalytic converters.
good points and bad for 2 and 4 stroke motors.
some of the good points about 2 strokes we like so much are the relative simplicity of the engines themselves, their lightness, ease of use, cheap to buy secondhand and very plentifull and fairly cheap to fix.
good points for 4 strokes are quieter running, perhaps slightly better engineered than simpler 2 strokes, much less polution from the exhaust (within reason)
bad points for 4 strokes are sometimes prohibitively expensive to buy when new, you cannot lay the motor down in back of the car, sometimes expensive to fix etc etc.
bad points for 2 strokes are noisey, smokey, smelly, oil dripping! (all the things we love about seagulls

)
I personally really like the design of a 2 stroke engine. its rugged simplicity has me intrigued and frustrated all at the same time.
if only the powers that be could see things in a different light.
ever wondered how difficult it would be to retro fit a catalytic converter to a 2 stroke. (dont bother, its not worth it) you'll probably end up wrecking the core of the cat in next to no time flat with oil contamination.
4 strokes on the other hand! now there's a challenge for somebody.
LONG LIVE THE HUMBLE 2 STROKE.
it has its rightfull place in engineering history. (despite all of its faults)
