40+ 1964 Villiers ignition issue??

Well, I was trying to remove the coil and left and right laminates, but experienced difficulty. The back laminate screws were defaced from corrosion and possible previous owner attempts to remove. I tried drilling them out but I don't have a drill press so I was using a hand held drill.

That was a dumb move! I messed up the laminates and the ignition base plate, so a forum buddy from AOMCI is going to sell me a used ignition plate and coil laminates.

Do the coil studs lift up after the nuts have been removed? Why are the back coil laminated screws so fine and difficult to remove? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have been outboard motor restore hobbying for 4 years, now I feel like a rookie. This is my first seagull, so I'm screwing up already.

Each laminate to be removed must be released from one screw and one stud. Not just undo the nuts, you have to remove the studs. Since the screws were defaced it was certain that you have to drill and retap. Threads are fine to avoid get loose from the vibration. I don't know if it worths getting another base plate or the whole system. Have a look here, this is a MK2 magneto and fits your engine. Not the original type as the one fitted to your engine but a later one.

You could use your cover even if it's not the appropriate. It doesn't really matters what cover you will use unless you care about originality etc.

The way to remove the Coil cheeks (laminates) is to undo the nuts , then use two nuts on one of the studs . Using two spanners - lock the two nuts together to form a lock nut.
Then use the spanner on the inner nut and remove the stud . They sometimes break but usually leave enough to use mole grips.
Under the cheeks is a small screw the holds the coil in the correct orientation. Plenty of experts on this site who are always willing to help . Please ask first

Have you looked around for a coil and base plate toghether. I have removed a coil from the base plate and taking out the screws and they can be a mission. You can purchase the screws from villiers themselfs and there not expensive. Keep working on it. Have a break here and there and you will get them out in good time.

Gentlemen, I was able to get a complete ignition plate and a good coil. Just have to wait near the mail box until it gets here.

mark the base plate and crankcase before you remove it. Then endevour to line up the new base plate in the same relationship.
