I always like to hear of a new enthusiast.

I can see you will get a second motor soon, keep an eye on the bay and the likes of Gumtree. You will really enjoy a complete overhaul.

On a lighter note...

OK, here is a link to a photobucket album with a few photos and a video running in the usual wheelie bin! The video should really have had a soundtrack of Pink Floyd's "Smoke on the water"!!

Deep Puple sang "Smoke on the Water"

H-A darn that looks great! I am not sure about the 'protecting' it part. If your lucky someday you will get a brass tank with the paint totally pooched. I just bought a featherwieght for it's tank so I can polish more brass

Edit:

Just looked at your album again and I noticed that you are in desperate need of one of Stelios's Copper fule lines and a Brass fuelcock. That might keep you busy till a 2nd tank shows up

I think I have done most of the work I intend to do on this Forty Plus. You can see the original state on the photobucket link at the start of this thread just over a week ago. It wasdnt in bad nick, just a bit scruffy.

It has been a fast learning curve for me, but enjoyable. I cant claim to have restored or rebuiolt the engine, but I have given it a decent service, clean and polish, so hopefully it is now ready to go on its voyage to France and will serve us well for our fishing expeditions in future.

The photos below are following re-assembly. I haven't tested it yet, I am short of a couple of split pins and my wife has reclaimed the wheelie bin!
I have done minimal painting, just the drive tube, and block in black, then a light coat over the gearbox and cylinder head. The rest has just been cleaned up where needed. The tank is obviously off a much earlier model, still not sure if I should paint it, polish it or leave it as it is. Also the prop is just bare, cleaned up aluminium, again not sure if I should paint this or leave it. I am sure I could do a lot more, but I am not looking for a showroom finish, just a good functional reliable motor

Fuel system is now fully cleaned, although there is still some verdigris I can see in the tank when I drained it, any tips on how to eliminate this? New spark plug, new HT cap on its way, oil changed, prop spring, new throttle cable etc etc and I am putting together a tools and spares pack to send it away with.

Looking forward to trying it out on an actual boat now!

Thanks again for everyones patience with a newbie, the advice has been superb.
Having had a play with this one over the last week, I may be tempted to try something a little more challenging next!

I apply a fine layer of Vaseline to brass to keep the shine.

I just give them a spray with WD40, that leaves a waxy type deposit.

Looks a nice tidy engine now, well done.

The result looks rewarding! Nice!

About the verdigris of the tank you could use caustic soda but this stuff is really harmful. If you touch it without gloves you get nasty burns. If you try this way you should wear protective equipment, goggles, gloves etc. A search in the forum will give you the info you need.
