Saving Old Seagulls

If you are using a two stroke oil make sure you use a oil that is designed for an outboard as it burns at lower temperatures, chainsaw two stroke oil is designed to burn at a higher temperature.Chainsaw oil will leave a lot more carbon deposits on the piston and around the exhaust ports. I think seagull recommend 30 grade engine oil for premix because it burns easily at low temperatures. The carbon deposits are also a lot easier to clean off if you use sae30 oil.

Amsoil is a full synthetic, the one I used is for labelled for all TCW3 applications although it's specifically marketed for the new injected outboards.

I got it mainly for it's biodegradable qualities, but while it obviously lets the plug burn cleanly and nothing ever oiled up, I wonder if it really is designed and tested for a low temperature application.

I don't want to have to write a thesis Bruce, what exactly do you want me to explain? as low temp is used a couple of times in this thread.

I would suggest that "low temp" in a Seagull is significantly lower than most other outboard applications where a thermostat is used. While there must be some internal heat generated in the cylinder the water flow is so generous that the external surfaces of the cylinder seem to barely exceed the ambient temperature on a warm day. While this may be less than optimum for many reasons it seems at least that you don't have to worry about overheating. One feature I really like on Seagulls is the fact you can run the motor briefly without fear of damaging the impeller due to it's design and there's no thermostat to fail, get stuck closed or generally play up due to corrosion and sitting inactive for long periods - so in practical terms it's a great cooling system.

The cooling system on the Seagulls are pretty basic compared to other motors, with no need to change the impeller every year and even if I did, I only have to undo two screws and its apart, but my impeller is bronze, so never had to do anything with it.
Most other motors you would need a new impeller every year and its not an easy job on most, I saw a seagull with steam coming out of the water outlet most of the day and it was absolutely fine, try that with a more modern motor.

Steams good, if you are getting steam then it means at least you have some water circulating

The best thing is being able to wash your hands in hot water when fishing.

I'm picturing you with a soap dispenser attached to the side of the petrol tank along with a brass ring for a hand towel complete with the Seagull logo:)

If you measure the water flow & the temperature difference you will find a Century is slightly better than a 1.5 kilowatt water heater!

And that doesn't include .4 of a cubic meter of exhaust gas at nearly 200 degrees C, leaving the exhaust port every minute, perhaps with some clever pipe work you could have a hand dryer & a lunch heater as well!

When fishing from the shore at night in winter we always had a potato pie sitting on top of the tilly lamp.
It's a Lancashire thing.

Just for the record my 90 is still oozing oil 3 weeks after my return from vacation, not much but I wipe it clean and next time I look there it is again coming form the lower exhaust tube joint - I think I've discovered a true source of renewable energy, liquid gold
