Saving Old Seagulls

So they got rid of the "bullet proof cranks" and changed to stupid weak roller bearings that are obviously not really up to the job
just so they can say on a glossy sales brochure "roller bearings"?
The Japanese were an unstoppable manufacturer and they still sell most of the outboards in the world
difference is their cranks don't break even though they are also roller bearings...

I know I may be being a little over cautious, but you can't get replacement cranks and conrods, unless Charles has some made.

What is the cost of a replacement crank/conrod Charles?

I would think that it would be as much as I paid for the engine.

I would also like to see how well it has been assembled, when this was built the workforce were a little random I have been told.

in 1992 these things were over £800

I was looking at a new Mercury 3.5hp engine in the Chandlery at Ipswich the other day and they were less than £600!

Are they 4 stroke?

Most of the small 4 strokes seem a little fragile, you can only lie them down in a certain position, or the sump drains into the carb, & there's a lot of plastic in them, at least that doesn't corrode.

Once you get past 12 hp some of them are very nice I've used several Honda's & they were very good, I tried to start an electric start 50 Honda when it was already running, I just couldn't hear it!

Got the spanners out, looks like a new one.



Now just need to get the flywheel off, will not bash this one, will drill and tap boss and make a puller.

That does look remarkably unused HA, painted exhaust makes it a very late model, we don't know when they ran out of anodised exhausts & started sending plain ones to the painter.

If anyone out there has a grey Seagull with a painted exhaust & a date code could they post the serial number on this thread.

Could not get exhaust off, must have some goo sticking it on.

Brass water outlet is still shiny after 22 years, I am almost tempted to assume needles are ok.
Had another look at the number its not KSR 800 or KSR 900

I would be logical that it was the 9th one built.

Got to look at the conrod, drilled and tapped holes then used puller (4mm holes M5) to remove flywheel.

Bashing with a hammer to remove the flywheel is like tossing a coin, this is the only way I do it now on CDI engines.

Perhaps SOS could supply a kit for CDi flywheel removal. Puller screws dril and tap.

Came off very easily, as there was overspray from the painting on the crank.
Conrod is very clean, as new condition.
Piston is also very clean, shows no signs that it has run much.
So it is now safe to run.

I will only use it in fresh water, will last me a lifetime.

KSR 168 J0 has a painted exhaust.

I am rebuilding KSR168JO at the moment.

Crank was a little out. previous owned had taken a file to the top bearing to free it up.

I popped the crank in the lathe, with a 4 jaw chuck and soon had it true again.
I replaced the bearing with one from a spare Kingfisher crankcase, but I still have play.

Put crank into a new century crankcase, no play.

Now I am looking for new bearings.

Kingfishers knock out the top bearing, Charles L you did warn me of that.
