Never mind the baking soda, let's get this 102 going properly!
Clean the carb, fuel pipe, fuel tank & refill with 10 : 1, a completely new mix.
Check the magneto base plate does not rotate, magneto base plate fixing screw is about 8 o'clock, spark plug is 6 o'clock, spark plug gap 20 thou, .5 mm.
Buy new copper cored spark plug lead 325 mm long & new non resistor plug cap to suit 18mm plug, carefully remove plug lead from base plate, at the base plate end of lead the Bakerlite end fitting should have a very fine spring with a brass penis like contact in the end, carefully remove brass contact without damaging the spring.
Insert a good, flat bladed electrical screwdriver down the inside of the spring & carefully unscrew the brass woodscrew at the very bottom, remove spring & screw, the plug lead will now fall out of the Bakerlite fitting.
Replace plug wire with new one, clean brass penis & refit lead & plug cap.
Check compression is 45lbs or better.
Now put it all back together, start it, check gear box lube & go boating.

Thanks for all the advice. A picture tells a thousand words especially on the locating lug under the base plate. I was looking for something inside the flywheel. Anyhow, I can report some progress. Put in new lead and plug and cleaned up connections, cleaned carb again and put it all back together. It now starts and runs but only with the choke shut. As soon as you open the choke it dies. I haven't had a chance to change the petrol but will do that next as it's a couple of months old. The good news is that she's pumping water like a fire engine!! I'm hoping that some new fuel and a bit more playing with the carb will get it sorted.

If not, then Forum Rule 37b (appendix 7), demands that any personal appendage used in the description of a members anatomy as part of their nom de plume is exhibited for members verification.

Sorry to disappoint you but the names a reference to the wife. Not sure she'd be too happy about a photo even if I had one.

I'm concerned that the carby is not original, whereas the 416 was used on later 102's it may well have come off a completley different machine and as such the wrong jets. If it was from another seagull the oil mix would now be 25/1 rather than 10/1... trouble being the early models need the richer mixture.

I bet the 416 is fitted with a 95 jet.
Unscrew the float bowl , look just above on the brass jet that holds the bowl on on the opposite side to the Amal stamp that number is the jet size.
There is a very remote chance, that if it ran weak in it's test tank test, it might have had a 100 fitted.

Run it for 10 minutes at full blast with a 95 @ 10 : 1, & check the plug colour.

It does have a 95 jet fitted to the 416. I've also noticed that drops of petrol are dripping out of the air inlet of the carb when its running. Not sure that's supposed to happen
I've had similar symptoms with old chain saws which usually indicate piston ring problems. I'll take the plug out later as I had it running for a good ten minutes with the choke on. Guess I need to invest in a compression tester.
