Re: Improve low-speed water cooling
dear oh dear oh dear
now your proper seagull enthusiast loves noise, smoke and racket ...
The better and stronger the 'perfume' issuing from abaft, the truer 'Guller you are
some have been known to add a generous slurp of Castor Oil to the mixture to get that gorgeous blue / grey haze developing astern just nicely
I mean, intercourse the wildlife old boy ...they should count themselves lucky not to have been shot ....just get the revs up to a glorious high pitched drone ....not only drowns out those nasty cetacian squeaks and whistles, but conveniently drowns out any commentary from HID ...should by some ghastly error she have made it aboard instead of standing loyally at the jetty for the next 8 hours lovingly awaiting your return ....and then to get a firm but fair bollocking for insecurely mis-tying the bollard hitch, and missing the 1st throw of the line .....Cuh ...Gurls huh ??
Nope...a true 'Guller revels in the cacophany ....then reaches for the pipe for a spot of vitamin N and to add to the trail astern, & to add to the ear-ringing splendour

That option remains open.

That aside, I truly do love the sound of a purring, well tuned, stinky-ass outboard in the morning.
There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.

Bugger Me!
Someone who can remember that!
I, would, kill for 5 litres of Castrol 30R!
Just 50ml extra to a tank of mixed fuel and the smell is as sweet?

Re: Improve low-speed water cooling
Yeah - Castrol R is still used by the vintage car fraternity over here, with its wonderful scent. to much inhaled is not good though, as it can lead to hasty departures to the toilet!
Funny stuff as well - being vegetable based, you can get snotty jelly growths in the mechanicals -at least in a four stroke engines. Rick

Re: Improve low-speed water cooling
The smell of petroleum oil's still in there but is less objectionable due to the perfume of the castor.... not unlike a spray of some floral air freshner in the head after use. I find Castor927 at the local motorcycle shop, and there's a brand called Klotz out there. So try the (motor)bike shops. Or, on line - http://www.motorshack.com/acatalog/BeNOL.htmlCollector Inspector wrote:Just 50ml extra to a tank of mixed fuel and the smell is as sweet?
That said, when I actively used castor oil in the past it was in an air-cooled outboard 3.5hp, and i still mix it for our "spare" Cruise 'N Carry, also air-cooled. I'm curious about the possible gumming up of the engine innards if I were to use castor as oil 1 in 10 or even 1:25 for the Seagull. Does anyone here use castor lube? That is, in a cool-running water-jacketed engine has it ever caused problems?
I know it's a topic change but as long as it came up (and I'm hijacking my own posting).

Re: Improve low-speed water cooling
I reckon a "Topic Swerve" is in order here as well
Castrol "R", bloody stuff was everywhere here down under in the late 70's and early 80's. I have my 1981 Suzuki GSX1100 EX still in the garage in plastic bubble preservative wrapped up tight last 15 years. 61,500Km on the clock. It always ran on R30 from new. Idling at traffic lights............smelled great!
Problem was it was hydroscopic, in that, it was necessary to change it often, specially during humid summers in Perth.
I also had a plethora of two strokes that also "Got the mix" and found that the early stale fuel just got put into my HQ Holden 350 of the time to stop "Glugging Up of Everything"
The HQ wafted sweet at lights as well.................Damn but I feel aged?
Marine mixing was out because of above but just a drop in the tank...............say no more.
I will follow that link previous, thank you, and contact Castrol Aus shortly.
Memories
Thanks For That

Re: Improve low-speed water cooling
Bit more of a swerve, sorry..........
My ducati 450 MkIII 1974" GP #13 Factory Italian" got the treatment as well! I have absolutely no idea how it got to Western Australia!!!!
No current pic as it is in bits under restoration. Anyone got a speedo drive assy for the front hub, twin leeding shoe?
This is it, right down to Smiths Guages in rubber.

I still have it!
This is my 250 1975 last outing 1984. I could start it today actually.

Sorry for nostalgic diversion mates!
Regards

Update
As a follow-up to this modification, I've done away with the stiff 1/4" Teflon line and used a long piece of clear vinyl tubing, the inside diameter of which fits around the smaller nub that's fitted inside the water discharge hole. This new hose's I.D. is therefore virtually the same as the engine block hole. Better water flow, etc was noticed yesterday on a sail.

Re: Improve low-speed water cooling
I am going to try this.
I will leave the "Tell Tale" just above water level and idle my Feather in the tub.
Sunday in the sunny back yard with a six pack and a rattle trap.
I have to take the tank off to clean it up mount pins rust anyway as that is the only problem with it.
Bugging me for a couple of years now.
Yeh!

Yes, cooling off the exhaust tube would be a capital idea.
And for no particular reason, here's an osprey coming in for a landing -

Here's an update on this thread - cooling water discharge extended down near the water line, using stainless steel tubing. Same 40+ longshaft as before.
