Charles, After all the information we provided you regarding the JM and SD register I was wondering how many SD engines are on the list.

Any numbers per country, did you found new information/patterns with the numbers and will you publish the SD register in the future?

So far only 20 SD motors are registered, with a couple in the pipeline. The vast majority are in the UK.

Yes I will publish it - I have to say it's a boring document - but sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the numbers. I would guess that as about ten thousand were made between 1942 and 1946 yours would be 1943 ish.

Paint is coming off quite easily

Image

It has the skeg stamp.

Image

Prop and gearbox in good condition.

Image

It has the remains of a side mount bracket.

Image

Clutch lever is wrong.

Image

Short Champion Plug cap.

Image

The unplated air inlet trumpet has been cut down.

Image

Throttle lever is correct

Image

It has turned out to be a good buy for £41.00 in my opinion.

Tank is steel and has the remains of the gold sticker, cap is chrome and mint.

Will it be ready for the Thames Meeting?

Has anyone got a spare clutch lever? :)

Got it apart, very clean inside I would think it has run in the last few years.
The scuff mark on the piston skirt are caused by zinc that got into the bore when it was galvanised.

Image

Tank stickers under paint, gold seagull facing right.

Petrol mixture works out at 6.4 to one :o

I think that the person who painted it white may have done me a favour,
under the paint it is well preserved.

This will be a quick rebuild, so it will go to the Thames.

In 1932 the first Marstons had the fuel mix in both Metric & Imperial ratios on the fuel tank transfers.
This practice continued until the early sailorman logo which only had Imperial mixes Charles P will have a better idea of the date.

If using Benzole they recommend oil mix 4.26 to 1 or if not 6.4 to 1. That is smokey!

Almost done, just need to do the gearbox and prop.

Neal have you found me a clutch lever yet?

Image

I have kept as much of the original tank decal as I could. If anyone else gets a painted tank and they want to remove the new paint, the method that I used was to fill the tank with boiling water. This softens the new paint and you can scratch it off with your finger nail.

Image

Gearbox wont take long, now just need a spark :)

There must be a way of dating SDs , mine has aluminium tank brackets and copper top, brass tank brackets and Ali top must be newer R.B.T. :D
