Saving Old Seagulls

Hello Graham, I've been busy cleaning up the gearbox, but for now have decided to leave the pinion, for fear of damaging my only case. I changed the propshaft bush easily, so it is now ready to reassemble.

Drawing was useful, many thanks. I've now got a load of parts to put back together, if I can get them in the right order!

I have now assembled all the parts for the SD bottom end, including removing the crowngear from another shaft jan sent me. The gearbox has responded to a good rub down with wet and dry, I'll do the same with the prop tomorrow. After that a deburr and clean up of the internal parts and polish of all the externals and it can all go back together.

What a supurb and simple piece of engineering the clutch mechanism is. So simple! Just lift up the fork and the shaft moves to disengage the dogs, leaving the gear spinning on the shaft. Great stuff to see and work on.

Has anybody got a photograph showing the correct position of the tank decals on a SD tank? I'm particularly interested in the location of the mixture and warning clutch fitted decals.

I decided against decals on my SD,my view point is that the MOD wouldnt want to pay for the advertising. More importantly those that dont know its a Seagull dont matter and those that do know Seagulls know a SD when they see one. Im sure yours will look superb no matter what!
any thaughts on a date for a northern get together ?

I must admit I was unsure, but having seen the finished article on DD's engine I ordered a set from the same guy DD did. The tank is about ready for a T cut after sitting next to the fire for 2 weeks. A few more days...

Regarding a midlands meet, I spoke to my mate who seems to think that using the scout HQ I have in mind would not be a problem. Parking and a slipway onto the canal. Half an hour to the river Trent via a lock. Plenty of open water to play after that!

I think a licence would be required, I'll check that out.

Dear Mr HA I don’t think anyone would object to your use of your woggle in the appropriate place!
But with the birthday of Seagull looming up a summer meet with as many SDs and 102s as possible
has to be the way to go. Fingers crossed that my SD will run once I’ve fettled it .

Sorry Mr HA I Had forgotten about our antipode an friends these where the issues I was hoping to avoid. I seem to upset most people at sometime or other without much effort .

Gearbox complete apart from a final polish. Decals applied to tank, and ready for final coat of clear. Just the vertical leg to do now.

Looking good, what type of lacquer are you using over the decal? Word of warning to all you would be Ali polishers please remember to wear gloves and a dust mask. Scary but a there is a link between contact with ally and Alzheimer’s.

I'm probably going to use Halfords own brand clear laquer, same as the the paint. Hopefully this will avoid any reaction issues (!) After that I will leave it to cure with some help from a warm environment, perhaps next to the hot water tank or similar.

Halfords do a "fuel resistant" version for motorbike tanks, but I've heard of this reacting with decals, so I don't think I will risk it.

On the home straight, just the leg and jubilee clamps for the tank to look at.

After that, another one to play about with

your SD looks very nice.
Good job on the fuel tank.
The possition of the decalls depents of if they were fixed on a Monday or a Friday.
It is a man's job, so every Seagull has a different position I think.
Keep on going.
I hope to sail with my SD next week, if the weather is OK.
As the British say to the Dutch: "When we are finished with the weather you ca have it."

I should get the lacquer on the tank this weekend, so I should have pics of the finished tank shortly.
