Secret new development for Lerryn.........

Post by 40TPI »

Tenacious and skilful undercover sources down under in Kiwi land report preparations to ship a recently developed high power twin carb Century across to the UK to take the Lerryn meeting by storm. All development and trials testing was done in secret so it is pure speculation as to whether this is a serious project. Rumours suggest it may still need some final tuning tweaks and could still have time to appear at a local race meeting before being put in the crate for Cornwall................ Is it a spoof? Will the Kiwi engineers or the UK race team own up?

Two carbs are indeed possible, and I believe ther photo is genuine.

That motor, if actually the real thing, looks like a contender. The early Century blocks are good, the twin carbs will give you all the fuel the cylinder will drink, and that prop looks like it's capable of ther high revs that will ensue.

My conversations this afternoon about a suitable motor have now been superceded by this thread; I shall have to scratch my head a bit more. Not that I'll be there, but I hope to be represented by a chunk of metal...

Never seen that one in the flesh & I've never been in that workshop.

Twin carb century's were developed by a Kiwi call Raoul Leyland, 8 or 9 years ago & were supposed to be very quick.

I've never seen one running during any of the NZ races I've entered, perhaps they don't run so good.

Raoul is infamous for thinking outside the box, I been told that the aliens that abduct people from Earth, dumped him off there, after they found him with an angle grinder in their saucers engine room, fixing stuff.

He's the man who built a 2 cylinder 40+, a Seagull powered ski boat (that's a boat that runs on skis), a Seagull powered punt that ran on a cushion of air, thanks to a Flymo lawn mower, & many more that I can't remember. He's the guy who invented the lifting transom bracket I use.

Twin carb motors are supposed to run very good, but have to run in the modified class, so they can't whoop all the stock Seagulls.

No doubt one of my spys will tell us who built this one.

And here are the rest of the pics of motors in that shed; missed the informers' second mail in my inbox this morning. Quality not brilliant but suspect it was only a mobey camera......catching a quick pic passing through.........

Looks like there is quite a bit of carry over from previous work on 5Rs....... With the rumblings from Poole it now sounds like we have the prospect of several teams entering some serious kit in Cornwall!!!!

Why didn't you post that before Peter, less than 10 5R's in NZ, so that limits the possible number of owners.

Not John Crighton, wrong shed.
Not Pete Notman's 5R.
Ross Leger has 4 or 5 though he was going to sell 3 or 4.
Bevin Leyland might have one, but I though he was no longer playing.

Right commence operation we can make you talk!

Yes the motor mine and yes it does go very well , carbs are small bore , block LLS , gear box is featherweight with its neck extendend to take the big SS two blader , and this all runs on a vitical lift jacking plate for surface proping , you will need to be going in excess of 12 knots to be even close max speed is 14 knots !Kiwi's can fly !!! ross NZ

Thay's a nice piece of work Ross you kept that very quiet!

14 knots that's over 15 mph that's not hanging about, next time you race it can you get someone to send us a picture of it going full tilt.

It will be nice to see an LLS hybred doing it's stuff, that's the first time I've had a glimpse inside your workshop, 1 stock 5R, can't see any 170 work happening, I'm not scared yet!

Looked on Google earth & can't see much movement at your place.

170 is in working progress , at the moment not a lot happening , the best I had the 170 going was when I had a tuned pipe on it , may go back to that to smash your record , the extra port for the twin carb was milled in with the port pressed in with lock tight to seal water gallery , milling was hard as steel was very hard
