Gearbox oil filling

I've just replaced the oil in my gearbox. I emptied the old out, measured how much there was and repaced with new the exact amount that came out. I took it out yesterday and it ran no problem, however, today there is gearbox oil (can tell by the colour) seeping out from all around the bottom of the exhaust tube. Is there a seal gone somewhere or is it that I've over filled it? Thanks in advance.

Are You sure its gearbox oil?
I also get a spent two stroke mix seeping from the bottom of the tube!

When I change the oil in mine, I lay the engine down, put the oil in a drop at a time. Every now and again I will stand the engine upright and when the oil starts to come out and STOPS coming out, I put the plug back in, JOB DONE!

Yes John it's definately gearbox oil. I have run the engine 3 times since changing it and the oil that is seeping out has got that emulsified/milky look. After the first time out it was just a bit of a small run and it was the same after the 2nd outing but after yesterday it is all around the bottom of the exhaust tube and quite thick.

Stand the engine upright, undo the plug and then replace the plug when the oil stops coming out, maybe you put too much in

Without the engine number it's more difficult to answer your question, if your motor is a 102, water is added to the exhaust near the top, which will mix with the 2 stroke in the exhaust producing this effect.

Many of the post 78 Seagulls had water in the exhaust.

Hi,
then there should be no connection between the gear oil and the exhaust. Gear oil can pass the top bush on the drive shaft but should not be able to enter the exhaust unless the gasket between the top and bottom castings is well shot. If this is the case the water would not be pumping very well. Are you sure, sure, sure that this is not fuel oil residue?

Thanks for the replys. After reading them it looks like it is engine oil. I stood the engine upright and removed the gearbox filler plug and probably had a about haf a cup full too much. This gearbox oil is quite yellow whereas the oil around the bottom of the exhaust tube is more brown. I have these last few times been using a 2 stroke oil for use with a petrol angle grinder as I have loads of it, it's maybe the bye product of this oil as I have mostly used outboard grade in the past and get a small amount of black oil at the top of the exhaust tube but never anything at the bottom.

But how do you know the correct amount was in to begin with?

your relying on a previous owner being correct?....
