I have since moved the base plate both ways, there was still not a peep out of the motor.
I did pump some petrol / 2 stroke fuel into the crabs air intake, that did nothing.

Try putting a couple of mm of raw petrol down the bore..if you have compression/spark /fuel then bang other than that it can surely only be that the fuel and spark are not meeting up and it's flooding....

Re: Forty series is this a Wipac 2 fault?
When I tried to start this motor in 2017 I gave up in the end.
I really do not want to do that this time so I am trying as many avenues as is possible.
I fitted a known very good HT lead, there was a tiny suggestion of firing, just the one, then nothing.
Next I removed the as new Champion D16 spark plug from the same engine, I tested that for a spark with the HT cable that they came off the same engine with.
On pulling the starting cord there was a bright spark, then nothing, I next tried a used but clean NGK A6 plug, same again, no spark.
Does this take me back to the points for re inspection, I think so?
That will be tomororw as I have done enough today.

Remove the flywheel to see if the key is fitted & visually inspect the ignition wiring.
The baseplate locating screw should fit into the dimple in the crankcase neck.
Measure the carb venturi with the back end of a 1/2" drill bit!
Did you bead blast that crankcase with the ignition in place?
You only need 3 things for a 2 stroke to fire, fuel/air mix, a good spark at the right time & enough compression.
The majority of us, make sure a motor will run before restoring.

Re: Forty series is this a Wipac 2 fault?
Thanks,
This motor has never been in my beed blasting cabinet, they never do, ever.
Cleaning the head and block of a Seagull is done by hand and with wire brushes.
I have a 12mm high speed drill here, so just smaller than the 1/2" you mention, mine is a loose fit.
I will try your other ideas in the morning.

My original 2 stroke days were with a 100cc racing Go Kart, or Formula K, the motor was an Italian racing Pirilla engine.
We knew that fuel and a spark means ignition, lean it off and you go faster, lean it too much and you sieze the motor

Who has a good and safe way to remove the flywheel, as even with all the British Seagulls that I have restored I have yet to remove a flywheel or open a motor.

So that's a 1/2" carb, what's the original?

Checking to see if the drive shaft is in place I slid a ponier into the slot in the flywheel.
It goes down 22mm which is 7/8" before it stops, is this correct?
Is th key in place?

This carb came with the engine it is fitted to.

I have an old 40+ which had very intermittent spark,it turned out the points wire was broken where it is attached to the Wipac coil, just a thought.

Can any of the readers of this thread, post a typical list of the steps they would normally take in the restoration of a 40 plus they've just bought.
2 or 3 different lists would paint a better picture.

The very 1st thing I check is it sparking does it have compression
Don't bother to much regarding fuel (there usually bunged up anyway. So basically i then know it's sparking know my ht lead is probably ok smile because I don't need to purchase a new spark plug and know ignition system is 99% ok then the spanners come out after that just make sure I do as could a job as I can.in failing that jump on here and ask the guru's IT WORKS EVERY TIME.

I meant the spanner steps as well, everything before the decorating starts.
