Century Plus and a Hurley

Post by Doons »

Hi, this is my first post. Hello.

I'm the proud owner of a 1973 Silver Century Plus Longshaft, bought locally for very little money from a man who realised its no good for his rubber dinghy. Good news - its all there and it starts on second pull. The fuel tank has worn paint & decal but isn't dented at all. Clutch works. Its was in typical ex-garage user condition, not guzzied up or re-painted and already looks better for a clean and a wipe with WD and an oily rag. Bad news - unknown history (he got it at a boat jumble), I've yet to see it pump water, bought as seen, dry. But it was cheap enough for a gamble and I already like what I know. I've tested it in a too small bucket, need to buy a bigger bucket. Will it pump? We shall see. If it doesn't? It'll pump. Nice Seagull. Be good.

Its going to be the second engine on Betty, my 1964 plywood Hurley Sillhouette. Betty was rescued and needed new topsides. She's coming together nicely. Ply is good like that. Can saw it up and make things with it at home. The main engine, in the hole where the prop used to be is one of the beefier electric trollers with the battery where the engine used to be. Silent & instant, but not much range. Which should be a good partner for the Gull.

SO Hello again. Thats me & my boat & my motor. Off to buy a bin. Wish me luck!

Doons.

Don't buy a bin use the weeley bin just perfect to test it.
Have the water level about 2" above bottom of exhaust pipe.
If you have a spark and good idea to clean the carb youll be away in no time..
Also check there is gearbox oil in the bottom..about half full 140 heavy oil.
good luck.

Optimism is no substitute for a nice tinkle, it seems. Time to post on the Help board. :(
