Any Seagull names out there?

Post by timmyr »

Thanks to the fantastic help from John at SOS and the final 'push over the line' via the forum my Seagull Forty Plus is flapping her wings. I have an old wooden cutter built in 1950 for the Royal Engineers to do the Fastnet Race in which we have sailled some 4000+ Nautical miles in the last 2 summers. Right royal came equipped with a plywood dingy of indeterminate age, however I do know that both RR and the dingy completed a circumnavigation via the Panama and Suez canals with the previous owners.

When at anchor the dingy likes to cuddle up to the hull of RR during the night, positioning herself as near to your ear, on the outside of the hull as possible. When in position, she then slaps relentlessly on the wavelets all night long. I have given up moving her, she just sneaks around and gets you again. A bit like watching a kettle waiting for it to boil, 'Slappy' as our dingy is now called, lies quietly in an orderly manner while you watch, cunningly biding her time, until deep sleep has come over you once again. Then she moves and starts slapping again and again and again.

So I now have "Slappy" and a good British Seagull engine, appropriate for RR and Slappy; but I think it important that the Seagull should also be christened. My immediate thought was 'Squawk'. 'Slappy' and 'Squawk' seems to have a nice ring to it. Further suggestions, comments and/or names of your seagulls would be appreciated.

Best wishes to all,

Tim

Hold the dingy off using the boom at 90 degrees?
Tis a nice name.

My seagulls all get called the same name only when they refuse to start.

Start you ***tard.

Other than that, only the boats get named.

I named my first two motors but then after that.....

My first motor, an LLS is called "tickles" after giving a me few zaps.

My second motor, an EDL is called "the dyke" which is politically incorrect as is she. Why? Square metal tank, unfriendly, noisy, brutal and has no sex appeal to me. Though with the benefit of experience the noisy part would be due to her being a longshaft and I had her too low in the water, but then again is it not her fault for being so rigid in posture that she wouldn't allow herself to be height adjusted?

No offense intended.

My favourite motor, an Anzani Pilot, which I use by far the most, alas, is unnamed??

I have named an Anzani Pilot after a late friend of mine who showed me how to resize a big end basically by hand. "Mike" the Pilot.

Then there is a rather original keeper Australian Olympic (Yep Same Year when we hosted)............"Tiller" or "Tilly" Absolutely no idea why.

An SJM that was a massive rebuild........................"Sally"

Feather weight 1976 as new in a box (Since gone as cardboard)......................"Little Bear"

An outstanding Anzani 5hp completely out of parts box.............."Y"

There is "Chook" 102...........Yeh was actually found in a chook shed.

An Australian Mermaid long shaft big bore like a "Debbie"........absolutely no idea why once again.

I have more but you get the drift with names.

Only something special actually gets a "Name" for any reason under the Sun. You should just choose what you feel without asking for Hints. Then again you just asked for what is out here already Aye?

They seem correct at the time........................"Laura" turned out well for favorite daughter aye.

I always name boats.
THIS truck, ('93 Dodge Dakota), is called, "Blue Gas Guzzling Pig", the other trucks I had were just called "truck" or "jeep".
My Subaru Outback is called "Subatruck" cuz I use it as a truck for work.
My BMW GS is just "Da Bike"
The outboard motors are just "Outboards" or names I can't really type here!
I saw this thread and named my sea gull, "Matilda", cuz that's kinda a cool British name, and I saw a movie where WW1 grunts were in a trench singing, "Waltzing Matilda" and it popped into my head for some reason, (unless it gives me problems, then it gets really BAD names).

Not a seagull name but my son's; In the late 50's when I was an apprentice, I was teamed with a lad from the West Indies , St Vincent. We became firm friends, he loved cricket and told exotic stories of his home in the Indies.. A few years later when my first son was born I suggested to my wife that we name him Vincent after Samuel. She agreed and so it was, but as I was addicted to motorbikes no one believed the story and it was always assumed the we had named the boy after the defunct motorcycle company "Vincent"
