I can't get my 'gull started. Before I start taking things apart, I need to know of there's a specific oil to mix with the petrol. I used Valvoline TC-W3 2 stroke oil.
Is that acceptable? The gas/oil mixture os a very dark colour.
2 stroke oil

Re: 2 stroke oil
Your oil is correct. TCW3 is the right oil for outboards.
How old is the petrol? Fresh petrol has more volatile parts and starts better.
How much oil did you use in the petrol? And is this the correct mixture for your Seagull/carburettor?

Fresh fuel, 10 to 1
Re: 2 stroke oil
10:1 is correct for a 1974 40+ unless modified to run on 25:1. See SOS website for details and identification of the alternative needle.Jim bow wrote:Fresh fuel, 10 to 1
I am surprised the fuel mixture is dark in colour unless the oil is very dark. If the oil is not highly coloured your fuel is contaminated

If your engine won't start, then you need to go back tobasics. have you got a spark, and is fuel being delivered? check your ignition system first then start working back through the fuel system, for cleanliness, blockages etc. Fresh fuel should be part of this.
a seagull in good order should start within 2-3 pulls if all is well. I suspect the main reason for poor starting is a dirty plug or closed up or dirty points.
